Hey Bomzin this just out today in Tom's may want to rethink your choice about boards???
http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/11/08/ ... age41.html

Yea I saw that . So I won't multi task . It also says for an extra 80 bucks you can upgrade to the Q6600, um more like $200 . Article also states the average OC is about 25% . You can push that chip Toxic mentiond more around the 60% mark . Figuring on biddig my time on the cpu .
1. What am I missing for OC? The board - mem - cpu combo I got I found on overclocker websites to be a great combo for pushing the e6750 as high as 3.4-3.6 stable. Does it have the fancy cooler temp pcbs, etc., no, but those are new and the old boards oc fine. The only thing I gave up was RAID and other bells and whistles which I do not use.
Really nothing Damnidge it's a good board , don't recall what or where I read something . But also no RAID like you said , I don't think I will ever go with SLI . From what I've read the gains have never been worth it, but also an option to run the second on the fire wire? :clown: Also some of the other bells and whistles may be worth the couple extra bucks up front.
3. I am really confused by the article posted by ACY on Tom's Hardware about the MSI board being the best overclocker. It is completely against what they posted earlier about p35 motherboards. If you scroll down to the performance chart titled "Maximum FSB clock" you will see a large difference between the MSI and Gigabyte/ABit boards when OCing:
A large differance when OC ? The are all within a percentile or 2 . The board you went with isn't even in the line up . Don't recall the differance between the version they tested and yours, I know they are small though.
. One thing this 2nd build has taught me is that a lot of choices about parts are from gut instinct and personal preference once you narrow the field to the best parts.
Have no personell prefrences , that is the problem , if I had one the choices would be easy .

Is RAID not worth the time ? Still having a problem with what board to go with . To many makes and modles , worse then buying a car. Think they'll let me test drive it first ?

Agreed. There were a lot of things, like one of the boards I looked at had 2 DDR3 spots, etc., that may justify the extra 20-40 bucks, just not for me, or IMO, a really budget minded buyer.

I think you may be looking at the wrong chart. The top chart is overall performance. I was talking about the next one down titled "Maximum FSB Clock." I was not talking about my specific board, but rather the P35 motherboard brands as a family. I read in several spots that the MSI P35 boards were the worst when it came to overclocking, and the Gigabyte and ABit ones are doing the best. I remember because my current rig was an MSI board and I wanted to stay with them, but the research showed some issues with overclocking.

I am specifically talking about overclocking only. If you read the entire article that I posted a link to they show the MSI boards toward the top of the pack in performance and other features when everything is run stock. Since you are talking about taking a 2160 and really OCing the crap out of it, I wanted to point out MSI may not be the best brand. That's all

Please don't mishear me, I am definitely not an expert so I may be completely wrong, I just remember reading a crap load about the motherboards and I was simply surprised by them picking the MSI.

Good luck.

One thing Damnidge it could be a new release of the board. They do periodicaly rework or make them better in the middle of production to fix problems. So that could be what we are seeing here.

Interesting point.

My only question to the revision process is, do they really change the hardware enough to cause a performance difference with a new revision of a board? Is it like when they upgrade the stepping on a CPU?

...i have not bought the CPU, Motherboard, or video card yet cause i'm not sure if it is "compatible" or whatever. i'm not really sure about fans cause the case already has 3 120mm. 2 in front and one in the back. i was thinking about an SLI board but i really doubt i'll be getting a second video card...
so i guess i just need to know if the CPU and motherboard will work with the memory that i already bought. and i'll probably figure out what power supply i'll get after i know what else i'm getting. i'm guessing i won't need over 600W.

noxiousCaitSith,

That is the mobo I have, and so far it has been near flawless. It runs my ram (which is the same OCZ ram you have there) at advertised speeds. My final specs are posted on the first page of this thread. It updates well, and really just worked awesome when I put my new computer together.

My only complaint with it is the fan warning noise, but that may be because of my after market Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro HS/fan. The fan failure warning buzzer would sound for 5-6 seconds on start up because of a delay with the hs/fan turning on. I had to disable the alarm in BIOS. It fixed the startup problem, but when coming out of stand-by mode it still beeps. Again, I'm not sure if it is the mobo or hs/fan, but overall a small issue.
