Monster Evolution Difficulty Proposal

Seeing that the server has been empty or nearly empty all month, I think this may be a good opportunity to do some drastic changes regarding the experience distribution. I also like to make the server more forgiving to new players. To tone down the difficulty, I propose the following changes:

Experience Distribution: Experience is no longer received at a per individual basis. Instead, if one player receives an experience point, everyone in the team receives an experience point. This will also eliminate the need for threat levels. Since weaker offensive classes no longer need to compete against the berserker's superior offense, we can eliminate the threat system altogether, and everyone will have max threat.
I plan to leave experience triggers and resurrection events alone where dead players may receive different exp rewards than survivors, and players' level may influence the experience gain. We can change that system later, but right now, I just want to concentrate the experience gained from monsters.
I also plan to change the scoreboard to show player's health and level instead of experience. Edit: After consideration, I was thinking leaving the scoreboard as is for the time being.
You'll still gain monster tokens from each team exp received. This will open up the more powerful player monsters early on.
Regarding weapon masteries, I can see two directions with this system. We can either have the masteries shared where if one player damages a monster with a rocket launcher, all players will have increased explosive mastery. This should also increase the experience requirement for each mastery level. The other approach is at a per individual basis, but the mastery requirement is significantly less.

Inflate the experience value: Bigger numbers appears to be more rewarding. Each monster should give more experience, but also the level requirement is increased.

Decrease the level requirement for later levels: It should require fewer map iterations to reach the next level. Instead of playing the same map 5 times for a level up, you should be able to level up once per hour (post rank II).

Increase the max level to 250: Due to lighter population, this makes some maps such as Divine Fortress and Robot Factory impossible to beat. Increasing the max level will bring a stronger arsenal to the battlefield, and increase incentive to keep playing after level 200 (especially since it'll be significantly easier to reach level 200).

Unlimited Friendly Monster Tokens: Keep dead players active, and provide unlimited supply of friendly monsters.

Reduce the cooldown for friendly monster spawning: Keep dead players active, and allow them to respawn often as friendly monsters (this will also apply to hostile monsters if the hostile monsters remain). I also propose the individual monster cooldowns, too. I don't propose reducing the monsters' score requirement since the experience values are likely to be inflated, and many monster score requirements are also configured at a per map basis.

Remove hostile player monsters: To make it easier for new players to adapt to the server, I propose we remove hostile player monsters. This also applies to dedicated monsters.

Server Reset: I'm still uncertain about this one. On one hand, people (including myself) will not be happy about starting over. On the other hand, a full reset will provide a great opportunity to try out the new experience values, and rebuild characters accordingly to the new setup (ie: remove monster abilities, increased level cap, threat oriented abilities, etc...). This will also give the server a clean slate. Resetting all map records are also considered.

Feedback is greatly appreciated. These are not final, and are open for discussion. I'd like to get to a conclusion by the time the Mechanic class comes out.

that's some interesting changes
but to be honest, i'm not so sure all of it would work out
experience distribution: one super strong player would be killing everything while everyone else would camp in safe spot. Lets take AS-Cubes for example. One zerk can rush through map and every low lvl can just afk at the starting point.
It might work if a damager (xp bringer) would get full xp and distributed xp would be a bit lower (idk, maybe 50% or bit less) to prevent them from afk-ing.
Could say the same for weapon masteries, although i would rather lvl masteries as individual, to force players to cooperate in playing rather than afk-ing somewhere behind.
Dunno what inflating xp value would change. For me it's horrible to just look at large numbers.
I completely aggre with decreasing lvl requirement for later lvls. Most players barely reach r4, and give up due to too long lvling all the way to max lvl.
I don't mind increasing max lvl, especially if these are gonna be reached easier than now.
Remove hostile player monsters: but that's what it makes server interesting! although it slows down the map progression.
In other invasion or assault servers, you're stuck to one team (unless you keep switching teams for trolling), but on this one you can play on the opposite (monsters) team and make gameplay more tense.
I don't mind server reseting. But i'm not so sure how other players would react to it. Some have put loads of time into lvling their chars.

Here are some feedback I received when discussing this on the server, E-mail, vent, and one case over the phone:

Distributed Experience
Majority of the people I spoke with are in favor of the new experience distribution system. Here are the common concerns:
Weapon Masteries: Of the few people that brought this issue, they seem to favor individual weapon masteries exp reward where if one player receives an experience point for a weapon mastery, only that player will receive the experience point for their mastery. This will encourage participation. The concern regarding individual weapon masteries exp reward is that it may be more difficult to max out weapon masteries. The solution to this concern is to not increase the weapon mastery cap. If the players are by default at max threat, then it should be much easier to max out their weapon masteries. If the experience is inflated, then I will also inflate the weapon mastery's experience requirements.

Idlers: If players can receive experience by camping the spawn, then players may not have the incentive to go out there and participate in the assault. Here's my proposed solution to this issue. Fix the idle kicker. Increase number of spectator slots to 3. Provide infinite friendly player monster tokens with very little cool down (many players often go idle when they're slain). And tighten rules regarding idling if the idle kicker isn't sufficient enough. Of course this isn't bullet proof, but there's little difference when playing objective experience driven maps such as Heated Escort.
There's another type of idler where the player is active, but not really participating in the assault (for example using the server as a chat room). There's not much I can do about this one, and if this is their idea of playing on Monster Evolution so be it. We can address this issue if the server population is competing for player slots. This will also become an issue if they stall the game (ie: other players waiting at progress volumes, or the active players are slain, and they wait for the chatters to join the battle).

Map Level Limiters: Currently high levels can only receive experience from hard maps. This brings a division in the player base when there are high and low levels. This is one of the reasons why people often play maps like Acatana where it provides experience to high and low levels despite that some players are tired of playing the same maps over and over.
The distributed experience system will not fix this issue, and they advise to remove the map level limiters altogether. The only issue I can see regarding removing the level limiter is that it provide very little reason for players to play the easy (low exp giving) maps. But after consideration, I think I'll prefer giving the players the choice of any map than restricting the experience reward to the minority. This will make the easy maps unpopular, but those maps still serve a purpose in case there isn't a high level around.
On a technical note, I'll need to update some maps if I were to remove the level limiter. Maps like Heated Escort and Divine Fortress relies on the level limiter to prevent players from gaining experience from damaging monsters. The monsters' score value are greater than 0 to allow abilities such as Life Siphon and Energy Leech to kick in when the monsters are damaged. Removing the level limiter would cause maps like Divine Fortress to give players experience for damaging monsters.
Let me know if you're against removing the level limiter system.

Inflated Experience
I received little to no feedback regarding this proposal. My guess is that people are indifferent about this. I guess there isn't a need to inflate the values.

Decreased experience requirement for later levels
People are generally in favor of this.

Increased level cap
People are generally in favor of this.

Removing hostile player monsters
It seems that people are generally against this. Here are the issues that were brought up.
Idlers: If there are two players, and one of them is idling, then the server will most likely get stuck (especially if there's a team progress volume). If the active player is slain, they can't do anything about the idler. There aren't enough players to trigger a map vote or a kick. With the hostile player monsters, they could at least spawn as an enemy, and slay the idler to end the map. I'm hoping the new idle kicker fix will prevent this from happening. Additionally, I can possibly allow weak hostile player monster to combat this scenario. This may cause confusion in which monster(s) are available though.

Losing part of the Server: Some people like being a hostile monster, and will be sad seeing hostile pms going away. I personally like the hostile player monsters for that enabled very interesting encounters. However this system is very fragile to unfair encounters. An Ion dragon or a Carcharodontosaurus usually means that the player with the high score will get to slay a teammate for another life. This scenario often creates tension and hostility between the players which causes me to favor removing the hostile player monster system.

Conflicting with the infinite friendly monsters: Having the hostile player monsters system may conflict with the new infinite friendly monster changes. Individual player monsters share a cool down timer to prevent multiple powerful monsters from spawning too quickly. For example, using an enlightened will disable the enlightened monster for all players for the next few minutes. I was proposing to significantly reducing the monster cool down to keep dead players active, but doing so may potentially cause a hostile player monster to spawn as a powerful monster every time.

Disables player monster appearances: Some monsters (such as the face hugger, bombing air drone, titan, and Tyrannosaurus) are only available to hostile player monsters since those monsters are typically too powerful to be against the AI monsters. Disabling hostile player monsters will also prevent players from ever playing as those monsters. My solution to this argument is to allow weaker versions of monsters to be played as friendly player monsters (excluding the bomber and huggers).

Server Reset
Although some people are in favor of this, people are generally against this for a variety of reasons. I'll most likely not do this.

I've decided against the Distributed XP system for the following reasons:
  • Difficulty in increasing weapon masteries.
  • Increases difficulty to repopulate the server. More players leads to more xp. However, if the server is empty, then it'll be much more difficult to bring more players since it'll be much slower to farm xp when soloing.
  • High levels could bring easy experience to low levels without having the low levels learning the game.
  • Further bias towards map based on their xp distribution. Certain maps are played based on their difficulty relative to the general player level. But with the distributed xp system, the maps that give the most PPH from the best player will most likely be chosen. This would reduce map selection range significantly.
Next update, I plan to increase the max level to 250. I've also decided to reduce the difficulty to level up. I'll need feedback to see if the new level up thresholds sound worth trying out. See lists below.
I'll also reduce the weapon masteries' requirements based on the ratio between the old and new exp thresholds.

Hmm nice, from what I see since lvl 34, you will need 60 more xp for each new lvl, To be honest I would make it 70 more from lvl 100, 80 from lvl 150 and 90 more from lvl 200 and above. Making the lvling too fast might bring boring times after ppl reach max lvl. Burek will have no problem to max his chars before year 2017 :D

I'd prefer not to change the value based on the level since that defeats one of the main reasons why we're doing this. It becomes very time-consuming to level up the later levels, and we'll need to ease the growth rate.

Looking at the server config, you're right. My local setup was specified at 96, and the server's config was specified at 80.

Reducing the req exp value from 80 to 70 doesn't seem like it'll make that much of a difference. Should I try 60 instead?

I think 70 is ok. Oh one thing, on plenty of maps that are for r4, when you are lvl 200, you only get 199win xp(Xenomoporh,DragonTower for example), this could be annoying in future :D

Typical scenario:
Lets say we are an average veteran player with 2000 PPH, and we want to reach current lvl cap 200 with current threshold of +80xp per lvl. For that we would need 572 hours.

Then this new lvling system is implemented and we want to reach same lvl cap 200 with a new threshold of +60xp per lvl, playing with a new account/character. That would take us only 434 hours, which is less for 138 hours (24%). But for reaching new lvl cap 250 it would take us total 726 hours, which is more for 154 hours (27%).

If a threshold of +70xp per level was implemented instead of +60xp, then we would need 503 hours to reach current lvl cap 200, which is less for 69 hours (12%); not much of a difference. But to reach new lvl cap 250 we would need total 843 hours, which means 271 hours more (47%)!

Therefore I would rather choose a threshold between +60xp and +66xp per lvl.
