Whoa, that's what I call a Texan-style wake up call. Let us know which episode of C.O.P.s that's gonna be on.

damn dude thats shit sounds fimiliar. Thats how "the other big server" handled things. The had 24/7 admins and were like "no such thing as aim bots" " nobody here cheats its your problem" from the "experts" who don't know but I was on there private little IRC channel. I was given the password to and got to listen in on all there stupid little shit they were pulling.

What all they said got me to try out how this "stuff" works.

One of my favortie sayings " keep your friends close and your enemies closer"

Joe, I'm not sure what you are referring to when you talk about what the other big servers out there are doing, and their dirty little secrets. I don't keep anything from you guys in terms of how I run this server. I have zero tolerance for cheating. Plain and simple. If I see it for myself, it's insta-ban. If I don't, I need prrof. Everyone who rails on about how I require a demo, or I'm not taking care of a cheater etc, needs to step back into reality. As I said to Ohms in another thread, what if someone came to me and said ":joeblow bots, I saw it" or "Defiant hit me with a lightning gun and I didn't even see him...haxxxorrss!!!!#@$#@!#@" What if I ban them? Is that fair to you? How do you prove your innocence?

I am not blind or stupid. I don't deny hacking. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a hacker on the server every day. Big servers are big targets for a lot of reasons, one of which is that it's easier to hide. But I would also guess that 99% of public accusations are false. Let me share with you two of my experiences.

1. I was playing Dreamus one night, and got hit with one too many shock rifle shots from one particular player to feel comfortable. I logged off, aliased, and logged back in. I watched this player log in and out of the server, changing names every time, turning an aim bot on and off. I watched for an hour to make sure in my mind it was true, and then I banned them.

I watched this guy for an hour! Number of public complaints of a botter? 0

2. Just last night, I aliased on the server (which I do from time to time to try and catch cheaters and troublemakers) We were playing Dria, and all of a sudden, the server CPU pins to 100% for about 20 seconds. Everyone complains about massive lag, and goes on playing. I look at the scoreboard, and sure enough, there's someone with a 250 ping who I've never seen before. I slip into spectate mode, and watch. I watched the guy for 10 mins as he turned his bot on and off. His name also changed 4 times. I didn't need long on this one. 10 mins, and he was banned. Number of public accusations of cheating? 0

Now I'm not saying that all public accusations are wrong. I've seen some very stupid botters that hop on the server, grab a shock rifle and hold down the fire button. Not hard to figure that one out.

Anti-cheat is not perfect. They kick people for innocent things like skins or voice packs. They cause skipping and lag for the players. And elite hackers can stay one step ahead of them.

So you have a choice. You can play on a server that kicks you for your homer simpson voice pack, causes a pause in your system every time you spawn, kills your system halfway through the map for mid game checks, or you can try to deal with it as best you can. And by that I mean this:

If you suspect someone of cheating, leave the server, change your nick, come back in and demo the guy. Send the demo to me, and I will be as happy as I can possibly be to ban the guy. Don't yell out hacker! That does nothing but alert him, feed his ego, or both.

Can you all understand where I'm coming from on this?

BTW joe, you said you tried these cheats out? Can you please send them to me and/or share your research with me? I need to evaluate them for myself. I am by no means perfect at picking cheaters out, and I have no idea what's floating around. I think me and my admins need to see these things first hand to understand better what to look for.

I wll PM you what I meant and what I know.

I dumped the old program and reinstalled UT jic there were any traces left before I played public again. I have a linux server here at the house.

If I was smart I' d try to figure out how to get it past my new D-links router but Im such a computer noob I cant figure it out.

Thank again for what you do.

You don't have to specifically accuse anyone of botting. I have found that just making a general statement to everyone playing will get them to leave. Sure it takes a little time to type the message and takes away from playing but is worth it (the lag will stop). Recently I was in a BitchSlap map and a player was making some really "Unreal Shots". I simple said stop hacking...they left the game and the lag stop...to my surprise they changed their name and logged back in. This time my friend notice the unbelievable shots this person was making. Yes, I check stats of all games I have played. When someone has 97.7% accuracy and over 2000 kills with a rear turret on a hellbender you start to question whether or not they are botting. Same goes for machine guns and shock rifles. There are several players I have been up against that are just kick ass players and deserve to be recognized for being really good (Pomona, Bomzin, Slayer06 are just a few). I have been playing this game since it came out and I think I have a good idea when someone is running a hack.

this is my exact position also. A few choice words is all it takes and the player usually just leaves or toggels it off.

You'll only ever catch the total n00b cheaters with this tactic. The real pros (and I use that term loosly when it comes to cheaters and hackers) can hide it very well from both anti-cheat programs as well as experienced admins. Sometimes an admin will just have to make a gut decision on wether or not a person is really cheating based on other factors.

Be very careful if you go down this path of testing out the current cheats available. I've seen many people get permanantly banned from the master server when they get caught up by Anti-TCC or a UTAN admin global ban and then claim that they were "just testing them out so I know what to look for as an admin" - an excuse that almost never flys. Use a system other than your main gaming one that isn't connected to the internet and then completely remove/reinstall UT from said system when you're done. A complete system reformat wouldn't be the worst idea either as some of the hacks (most?) contain viruses, spyware or worst of all CD-key stealers as part of their standard install package.
