'Best' Linux Out there ?

OK here is some common sense....2 diff hard drives one with Linux one with Microsoft!

Haven't looked into it. I do know that the mac client only uses the speex codec, which may be a licensing thing. Doesn't look like you can even download a linux version from ventrilo. Maybe there is a opensource version somewhere??

Doing a quick search for Linux and Ventrilo comes up with links for install the windows client under wine.

The Linux version is still under development, as it says on the main Ventrillo download page.

When you get your new PC built, install the free vmware server. Then download an Ubuntu iso. You can start vmware, mount the iso as your cdrom, and then go to town playing with it.

I understand ISOs and how to mount them as virtual drives. I have no clue what vmware is. I read over their page quickly - is it basically a server emulator?

Yeah, you can kind of think of it like that. It is providing a virtual machine.

So, you can run your host OS, say windows, and then run some other virtual machines, such as Linux, Windows Server, BSD, etc.

I recommend this for trying things out. That way you are not screwing with your hostOS too much.

I would not try to run say UT in a VM. Hardware acceleration for graphics just isn't there.

Don't waste your time. You won't get it to work - even under wine (for our vent server anyway). Many have tried, all have failed.

As a side note:
Any of the latest top linux distributions are very user friendly and will act just like windows. Also if you need help with something, there's many forums relating to your distribution of choice out there and everyone is willing to help.

I like Ubuntu. The just released "Gutsy Gibbon" is pretty good. Ubuntu has a very friendly user interface but also has Debian underneath. nuff said.

In terms of getting ventrillo to work on Mac and Linux. Don't bother. It's been going on for about 2-3 years now. There are licensing issues involved with the GSM codec and they are having a hard time getting it to work on non microsoft operating systems.

For mac users, you can just get parallels or vmware and run vent through windowsXP. Not elegant but the only solution (and expensive). I recommend vmware fusion over parallels.

Linux users can use wine, but wine kinda blows chunks with vent for some reason. Linux users are left in the dark here.
