I use IRC all of the time and it would be great if members of the DW community would come to IRC and hang out. I know that you guys are aware of the existence of IRC and haven't used it in the past, but what if it the barrier to getting started were very, very low?
What if it were as easy as clicking this link, entering your screen name where it says "Your Name" and then clicking <Submit>?

Yes, it's that easy to get started! Come on Monster Mashers--let's hook up on IRC. I created channel #SVA for us.
Note--you can maximize the chat window by clicking the min/max box next to the close window X and a separate window will pop up. You can drag the lower right corner to change the size of that box. For those of you who have UT3, UT3 channels can be found at #ut3ctf, #ut3tdm, and #unrealna. Type /join #channel to join another channel. (You can be on multiple channels at once.) UT99 CTF players--come visit #speedpug
Why use IRC when you can use Ventrilo? Because if someone isn't around they can't hear the public chatter whereas if a bunch of people are idling on IRC, then can read the chat at their leisure or take a few minutes off to grab a snack and then come back later. Also, if you're doing other things it might be nice to just idle in the channel and check it out now and then.

I agree, we should have an IRC channel. I've actually mentioned it a couple of times before (I think to Hornet?). Even though I'm usually idling on Ventrilo too, I have it muted during the day because it's too much of a distraction to try and have a conversation while working. IRC is a lot easier to juggle at your own leisure.

It seems like the younger generation uses Instant Messenger type programs and XFire nowadays. I'd say that most folks have never heard of IRC. It's kinda funny because the UT99 community used it heavily but it wasn't used nearly as much by the UT 2004 community. Most of the folks using it for UT3 are preexisting UT99/UT2004 users.
BTW Wail, at first I created channel #clandw and took ownership of it thinking that I'd make that the channel, but since I'm not a Clan DW member it didn't seem right to have that as the channel for community members. If you want I can transfer ownership of it to you. (I can't seem to disown myself of it, so I'll just hold onto it for you guys for safekeeping until you want it.)

By "over here" you mean "across the pond"...in the European scene?
