When I spawn after dying in the previous round, I am unable to switch, fire, toss, or pick up weapons. Nothing works. Not even the trans. The only way to get things working again is to reconnect to the server. This has happened well more than a half dozen times today. This glitch? is something I've never seen on the DW INV server before.

Now here's the thing - I know DW recently made some changes, but I also have to tell you that I bought Ghost for the first time ever. So I don't know if it's Ghost or perhaps something related to the recent changes.

I don't know it this could be done, but if an admin wants to try removing ghost from my profile to see if that's the problem, I'd be up for that. Let me know.

=========================================

Also, it seems that as the game progresses into the later rounds, shots and monsters start to disappear. (Early rounds aren't a problem.) Once this starts to happen, things may improve a bit but I haven't seem them revert back to normal. However, if I have to reconnect as in the circumstances noted above, then things are normal.

Makes me wonder if it's a cache related problem. But honestly, I really don't know. I'm just offering an idea for starters.

Ya, it might just be a connection problem somewhere between my router and DW's, as far as the disappearing shots and monsters are concerned.

Regarding the issue where I'm unable to get anything to work when I spawn after dying in the previous, I'm less inclined to think so. I know I have some packet loss. But as I've mentioned in another post, I've seen as much as 70% packet loss with F6 and never saw anything like this. I'm not seeing anything approaching that now, as far as p/l is concerned. This is new. To me anyways.

70% and no issues? Whatever, I have 4 packet loss and I have all the issues you just described. It is more than likely a connection issue, period. I have been on when you are on and told you that you were having packet loss. You say it's no big deal that you have packets lost....hum your wrong packet loss is the total bane of gaming, higher ping no problem packet loss problems.

If I remember, I'll try to reset your ghost ability to 0. Best if you can send me an e-mail to remind me. I'll try to do it tomorrow afternoon during my lunchbreak.

Let me know if that fixes things. Perhaps there is something wrong with ghost level 1.

I'm going to have to agree with Acy. If I see even 2% packet loss, the game starts behaving very strangely, dud projectiles, missing projectiles, all kinds of stuff. Anything can happen if you're missing information, or if the client and server get out of sync.

Yep Acy is correct. If I have even a 2 or 4 PL I start to lose sight of things. Sometimes it gets better and sometimes it doesnt. Reconnecting will solve the problem for a short period of time until I start getting the PL again.

I had a similar problem and heres my story. About a year ago, maybe longer I can't remember, I played on the UI server where all of a sudden I couldnt see weapons fire, monsters, couldnt use the trans or pickup weapons. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, wiping my HD and reinstalling the OS and installing older video card drivers but still had the problem. I went out and bought a new router but again no luck. I called m ISP and they rewired my DSL line, gave me a new DSL box, put me on a new circuit and for some unkown reason they decided to give me a static IP address (I laughed at that one) but if it fixed my problem I was willing to give it a try. Well all that and I still had the problem. Now I'm pulling my hair out and a few cuss words later I focus on my hardware. I had 2 7600 GT PCi exp cards running in SLI and pulled out 1 at a time to eliminate a video card problem. Then pulled out my memory trying different combinations to see if it was memory and again no fix. Now I'm thinking motherboard or CPU so I went out and got a Nvidia 680i SLI board and an Interl Dual core extreme processor and new memory. I rebuilt my machine, launched the game and guess what? Same problem. I was like WTF everything is new, nothing is broken and I'm still having the problem. I looked at my computer which by now is sitting in a new case, with all new hardware, new OS everything patched and a light in the back of my head turned on :idea: . I said to myself no way, it can't be, nothing is that easy. So off to the store I go and I picked up my new prize possesion all the time cussing myself for not thinking about this before. I got home, installed it and guess what?

Problem solved. :cheers:

Now you may be wondering what that prized possesion was!

It was a new 850w PS. I guess my old 550w PS was having problems and wasnt able to provide enough power to my system. What a pain in the arse it was and what a fool I felt like. But whenever someone states an problem like yours the 1st thing out of my mouth is check your PS. I could be wrong but if it prevents someone from going through everything I did to fix my problem (all for a game my wife kept saying) then its worth posting. Then again it could just be PL and nothing to do with your hardware. Hope you get things fixed though.

The good news is I upgraded my system for another year or two. :compress:
The bad news was my wife wouldnt stop laughing at me. :blackeye:

This is where I should have applied the Occam's razor principle.

Sorry dvn but i'm another one that agrees with the rest of the guys. As soon as you get PL, you can kiss your game goodbye. The only way i know how to temporarily get rid of it is to reconnect. It's just one of those things we have to live with unfortunately. The only advice i can give is to see what wave it is before you reconnect. It's sometimes prudent to hide somewhere safe and collect the bonus xp for winning the game, even if you don't get to fight. Better that than reconnecting as a spectator on wave 16!

Whoa there...lol. ACY, I really love playing on the DW server and don't want you to think I'm disparaging anything about DW or its servers. And I completely agree with you, ACY, that p/l is the bane of the gaming community. I come in peace. :) Truly. I'm simply trying to get a handle on this situation.

So just to clarify, I didn't say I had no issues with 70% packet loss. I said I never saw anything like not being able to switch weapons or even use the trans until just recently. And ya, that was with 2 - 4% p/l, as you also experienced. It's been frustrating for a few people, but that's life, eh?

Ok, now for an update. I played last night and everything was great. Sure there was a little bit of a few shots disappearing, but it was only momentary. I noted that the p/l was 0 - 4%. Very playable.

So what changed? Well I don't know about the Internet because I didn't do a trace route, but I can tell you that acting on my suspicion that this is somehow cache related, I went ahead and changed a cache setting in ut2004.ini from 256Mb to 64Mb...

[Engine.GameEngine]
;CacheSizeMegs=32 <- default
;CacheSizeMegs=256 <- a setting I have use for the last 2 years or so
CacheSizeMegs=64

... and proactively used the 'flush' command in console to empty the cache.

Now maybe last night's good performance had nothing to do with the .ini tweak or console command, but I'll know better in time. For now, I'm glad that whatever it was, it seems to have stopped.

Oh and Wraith, I ghosted a number of times last night and it worked perfectly. I lvl'd up to full Ghost capabilities while playing last night and each lvl worked as you would expect. So I won't need you to do anything if you haven't already. But thanks for your attention. I really appreciate it.

If these problems return, the next thing for me will be to contact my ISP. I've done so in the past and have gotten them to switch the routing to the SD servers. In that case, the p/l I was experiencing was dramatically reduced. I think I was pretty lucky that time because the tech was a gamer so he related to the problem.

Thanks for the feedback, all.
