I want to throw a question out to you all since we have a lot of techies in this bunch.
My computer is at that point where I have to back-up, erase, and reinstall my OS. This is mainly due to me not allocating enough size to my OS poartition and I'm running out of room there. I also experimented with some partitions I want to get rid of.
Before I do it, I am considering installing a copy of Windows Vista Home premium instead of XP. While I know there are a lot of people who reject this OS altogether, we have it at work and I want to get more familiar with the roots of it at home. So far at work I really don't have any complaints with it - I've just noticed that you need a lot of ram for it to run well.
The only thing I have not tested with it is the ability to run games. If I were to install Vista, would I still be able to run CoD4, UT2004, Crysis, etc.?
Also, I was thinking about getting the 64-bit version of the OS instead of 32. Is there any risk to this? Benefits?
Besides just totally bashing the OS, can anyone with actual experience with it give me some feedback as far as pros and cons? Thanks all.
Windows Vista & Gaming
I've heard claims of punkbuster not working smoothly and causing 5 second no response delays with vista.
As far as drivers it's a mixed bag. This is an article from Feb 1 2007, so quite a while ago. I haven't seen anything recent on the subject. However, choco claims that vista + gaming is terrible.
And P.S: You are the ultimate Douche.
P.P.S: You can always Dual Boot.

Damnidge,
1st of all what kind of hardware do you currently have?
I run Vista 64bit with a dual core extreme, nvidia 680i sli board, 4 gig corsair memory, 8800gt oc 512 vid card, (2) 200 gig hard drives, 850w power supply and a hp 22" monitor. UT and COD4 play great under Vista and actually much better than under XP. I don't play Crysis so I can't speak for that one but I would think there wouldnt be a problem. Vista SP1 and all updates has actually become a great OS. With that said keep in mind that Windows 7 should be out in a year and although it may be considered Vista SP2 it will probably replace all versions of Vista. I hated Vista when it came out but after SP1 and all updates including hardware drivers I have no issues and I will never go back to XP. Vista has some bells and whistles that are not needed and can be turned off. The UAC (User Account Control) was the 1st for me but for some they may prefer to keep it. but for me theres nothing more annoying than always being asked "Are you Sure".
The more memory you can thrown at Vista the better. Remember the 32bit may allow you to put in 4 gig but it will only address between 2.5 and 3gig. however the 64bit Vista Home Premium supports up to 16gig and the 64bit Vista Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate supports up to 128GB.
As far as where can you get it all I can say is check online.
Hope this helps and if I can think of any more info I'll edit this but right now I have a headache and I'm going to bed.
Here is an article from a friends website in regards to Vista now or wait for Windows 7.
Should You Blow Off Vista And Just Wait For Windows 7? - 10-05-2008, 10:43 AM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello everyone.
So we are a junction in the life of Vista where people are seriously considering just waiting for Windows 7 to appear and skip Vista entirely. So what do I think? Do I recommend anyone skipping Vista?
My answer: No. And here’s why.
As you all know (or maybe you don’t. I don’t want to assume anything here) Windows 7 is for all intensive purposes, Vista… let’s call it SP10.
You all also know Windows 7 is due at the end of next year (just in time for the Holiday season is the thinking right now), with a rumor it could show up as soon as June of next year (that’s just a rumor so don’t hold your breath waiting for it) so why wouldn’t you wait for it? Simple Windows 7 is Vista!
Microsoft has stated up and down Windows 7 is the next version of Vista with no radical changes to the OS other than performance enhancements across the board. We also have heard Windows 7 will be based on the Windows 2008 kernel (or a variation of it) which, if you have followed this site at all know I run Windows 2008 server as my main OS after making a few tweaks to make it look just like Vista is now.
So, why would one not wait until Windows 7 is released? Well, here are several reasons:
1 – Hardware – Since Windows 7 is Vista any hardware purchases you make now will work with Windows 7 so you are pretty safe in that regard.
2 – Drivers – Microsoft has flat out stated drivers which work under Vista will work under Windows 7. No major changes to the driver model are expected.
3 – Software – Since Microsoft has stated Windows 7 is just Vista’s “big brother” all the software which works under Vista “should” work under Windows 7. I have read nothing which states any major changes to the software model will be needed.
4- The Economy – As we head into the holiday season with an economy heading quickly into the toilet (at least here in the states) “Sale” is going to be the main word this holiday season which, for those who are still employed, will be in a perfect position to pick-up some terrific deals on new laptops or desktops.
I’m already seeing well equipped desktop PC’s for under $500.00 bucks and when you add in the upcoming “Black Friday” sales getting a terrific deal will be even easier (that’s if you get in line quick enough) but even if you are not a “stand in line all night” kind of person, you should still see some terrific deals over the next couple of months.
5 – Convenience –As I have stated Windows 7 is Vista so when Windows 7 rolls around and the world embrace Windows 7 you already have the hardware, software, and working knowledge of how Vista works which makes the upgrade to Windows 7 MUCH easier.
I know the word on the street is to wait but personally I think this is a terrific time to grab Vista, even if it’s Vista Home Premium. I was at my local Costco last weekend and I saw an HP desktop system LOADED (and I mean loaded) monitor and all for $1,100.00 bucks (22in monitor, 4GB RAM, Quad Core, etc…).
The last point I want to make is upgrading to Vista now is the smart thing to do.
Here’s why.
Let’s just say you know if you upgrade to Vista you need to get some new or upgraded hardware and software. Let’s just assume that for now. Wouldn’t it be easier to add-in those upgrades over time vs. thinking you have to do it all at the same time? Well of course it would. You also need to take into account the fact that you DO NOT need to remove any of your current XP systems. You can simply add to your already existing XP network your brand new, shiny Vista system. You can then slowly move away from your current XP based system's (or give them to the kids) on your time line except having to do it all at once.
Folks, this is the PERFECT time to start to consider getting that old XP network updated. We are coming into the best ‘Sale” time of the year and as I said, with the economy the way it is this Holiday season is the perfect time to grab some fantastic deals on Vista systems.
I do recommend you grab the Vista x64 version of Vista as I personally think you will find a lot of RAM and a 64 bit OS makes for a much better computing experience.

Might it not be simpler to install another hard disk ($80 for 750 gigs these days) and move stuff as necessary until your OS has enough room?
Vista has never given me any problems. I've never even run CoD4 XP, and as for UT, no difference whatsoever. Unlike most rumors I have heard, Vista has actually been a rather pleasant experience in comparison to XP. XP has crashed on me WAY more than Vista has. Go figure.
As for your post count, simple. After your status was changed, your post count was reset to zero. Then, during a little house cleaning of mine, a handful of threads were deleted that had a few posts from you, which were subtracted from your total of... 0. Go PHP-nuke!
What I can say is that a little tweaking here and there may be necessary, but for gaming, this Vista system drastically outperforms my dad's computer which is basically identical, with the exception that his runs XP. Not a fail proof comparison, I know, but still.

I have also been thinking the same mr.damnidge and had the same worrys.
I tried the teaser of vista for a while but didnt do much gaming on it.
From what ive heard it is alot more reliable than most people think for pretty much everything.
