Don't you need a computer to make forum posts? o.O

Well a little information goes a long way.

What OS are you running?
What was the error msg?
What has changed?
What were you doing when it crashed?
Did you get the BSOD?
Did it just reboot?

I can list a 100 things but unless you provide a little more information its a tad bit difficult to give you any help.

You need Gremlin Poison!

You put the poison in the gingerbread cookie, and when he bites the head off... NO MORE GREMLIN!

Seriously though, like Damaged said, we need a lot more info.

There are only 10 kinds of people in the world. Those who read binary, and everyone else.
4013 is only a FAD
And 2989? Well that's just BAD

Haha
Well I am trying to format my laptops harddrive and it wouldn't let me because I had temporary files needed to continue installation.

My operating system is windows xp home. (I want Linux but don't know how to get it =D)

I couldn't format drive. Now when I put the disk in it says:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing
or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

The change is I can't boot computer at all.

I was trying to format the drive and it wouldn't let me. I have duel boot right now though. Just not a lot of hard drive space.

Nope Bsod.

No but it can reboot.

1st of all why would you want something when you don't know how to get it.
2nd if your formatting your drive then your either booting from the CD or a floppy and in either case you would not have temp files open. I hate Windows XP home edition but if your feeling skippy you can try 1 of the following steps to get back the hal.dll. In any situation like this remember GOOGLE is your friend.

Also I don't take responsibility for any damage that may be caused by providing information to help others.

Iif you have 2 machines you can try copying the hal.dll from the other machine to the machine thats not working. More than likely though you will find that the hal.dll file is not the only file that has been corrupted or damaged and a rebuild will more than likely be required. Hope you have a backup of all your data and if you don't know what your doing I don't recommend that you try this yourself.

HAL.DLL is Missing

Option 1:

Boot from your CD and follow the directions to start Recovery Console. Then:

Attrib -H -R -S C:\Boot.ini
DEL C:\Boot.ini
BootCfg /Rebuild
Fixboot

Option 2:

Boot from your CD and follow the directions below to start Recovery Console.

Insert the Setup compact disc (CD) and restart the computer. If prompted, select any options required to boot from the CD.
When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts; choose the repair or recover option by pressing R.

If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access from the Recovery Console.
When prompted, type the Administrator password. (if you didn't create one try pressing enter).

At the system prompt, type Recovery Console commands; type help for a list of commands, or help commandname for help on a specific command.

Most likely you will need to expand the file from the CD. The command would be expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll. Substitute d: for the drive letter of your CD. Once you have expanded the file type "exit" to exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer.

Hope this helps

Well I went in and found the dal.dll files but I put a new one in from the disk by the copy and paste command. It overwrote the other one but it still doesn't work. And I can't boot to recovery either at all.
