I decided that as i seem to play ut practicly everyday for hours it might be fun to try my hand at creating my own map.
I was just wondering exactly how hard it is to do this and are there any good websites or specific tools i need to do this. I dont really know anything about it where to start or anything so any information would be useful
thx guys and gals

It's between not that hard and as hard as you make it, depending on your personal standards.kaeolian wrote:I decided that as i seem to play ut practicly everyday for hours it might be fun to try my hand at creating my own map.

Ok so iv finaly found a tutorial that will get me through the basics of map making. Now the only plroblem is when i create my first "room" or cube when I "subtract" to create my space and give it texture, in 3D view it drops below the grid is this right ? becuase it seems to stop me working on it any more unless i do it in 2D which really isnt very useful when trying to put in objects etc ?
Maby im just being stupid or the tutorial isnt very well written (some places lack major detail >.<) either way im stuck lol any help would be appreciated.
Cheers SVA>Kaeolian

The line your probably referring to is the center of the "universe" and whether the subtracted space is beneath it, it should not matter. Its just a reference point.
How exactly does the editor stop you from working in the 3D part? Do you mean you can't move back and forth from within the 3D part? TO move around in your subtracted space, press and HOLD the left mouse button, while rolling your mouse forward and backwards.
To move vertically up and down, hold both the left and right mouse buttons down while scrolling forward/backward/left/right....
Let me know if this solves your problem, or if I'm way off base...
I can look for some tutorial .pdf files of map editing, not sure how much it will help you.

The visible grid in 3D wireframe mode is just centered at the vertical origin of the map space, it is not important if your subtracted space is above or below this line as it has no effect on the map. I don't know what you mean by "stop working" exactly. I suggest you add a light to the cube, then add a playerstart and then "Rebuild All." If that doesn't work there is something else going on.kaeolian wrote:Ok so iv finaly found a tutorial that will get me through the basics of map making. Thanks for the responses guys, It was moving up and down in the 3D view i couldnt do thats why it seemed like it was under the grid... lol stupid i know.
Sorted it now tho
Ok ive got another question (dont feel you have to answer tho youve already helped loads)
I have created two basic rooms with a raised tunnel between now to get to this raised tunnel i wanted to add some stairs, so as ive already hollowed out my room i should have to add my stairs back in right ? and it seems like i have done this only problem is there is no skin over them i cant see them in game.
When i look at the brush propertys > display > skins > i have a skin selected (doubt its ment to stairs tho ) Do i need specific stairs skins for it ?
Thanks again
SVA>Kaeolian
PS. All this will eventualy help me bring out a kick ass map for you guys so if im annoying you now think of the map as payment =P
PPS. Do you think it would be a good idea to ask toxic to add a forum for map building questions ? Places to show ure developing maps and places to put beta maps ppl can test them out ? Just a thought.

ya, a mapping forum would be great. Perhaps we'll see one soon...
There is no such thing as stair textures etc. You can apply a texture by clicking on the spot you want the texture to be applied to, then click on the texture you want to use, and you should see it on the object right away.
Did this help ya?
