On my system, the overall effect results in a slightly higher overall volume, which helps with games like UT3 where the minimum volume is still too loud. Just turn your main volume down a bit.
I did my tuning with the Inbound volume at 0. Make sure you set yours to 0 when you enable the compressor. If need be, you can tune it later, but it should be 0 to start or you might get too much or to little compression.
Disable all special effects that you've assigned to any other users (you'll see an "S" next to their name or channels, otherwise the compressor settings will be overridden by the individual's settings.
Also make sure you check in the "SFX" button next to your sound card in 'Setup' and remove any special effects.
To setup the compressor, right-click Death Warrant Public Ventrilo, go to Miscellaneous -> Special Effects, add the compressor, and double-click to go to its' properties. If you're having trouble dialing in an exact number with the mouse, you can use the left and right arrow keys to adjust, or just get it as close as you can. Set them to:
Gain:20
Attack:0.01
Release:250
Threshold:-40
Ratio=100
Pre-delay=0
If someone's still to loud or quiet, add a special effect for that person and use the same settings as above, but increase gain if they're too quiet or reduce threshold if they're too loud.
