No, I wasn't saying you don't contribute to anyone, there are many organizations that help many different groups of people, like the VA you're talking about, or specific minorities, or people with certain diseases, or religious organizations... but there are still millions of regular schlubs that don't fall into any of those specific categories to give help to.
I'm just coming at this from the angle of someone who's in the last month gone to the ER coughing up blood and not knowing why, having X-Rays taken of my chest, given no explanation whatsoever on why I'm coughing up blood, then sent to a Psych hospital (when I came to the ER for a physical issue), which then released me 3 hours later with no treatment whatsoever, no follow-up, no medication, no explanation, nothing.
I still have no idea why I was coughing up blood that day, other than what I've inferred from WebMD about my state of dehydration at the time (not being able to keep down any liquids for more than a week), and some other symptoms. I'll just give a thumbs up and assume everything's OK, and move on.
People are led to believe there's help there when you really need it, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it. Cash is king, even when you're seriously ill.
It just sucks to go from being someone who's worthy of keeping alive, to someone who's on their own... because of a medical condition.
