Oh, and don't worry guys. UT2k4 may have its ups and downs like every game but it isn't going anywhere. A lot of the younger guys and gals have went back to school and with the master server thing, which hasn't seemed to cause me any problems thus far, maybe we are having down time, but it wont last forever. Look at UT99, it still has a lot of players, regulars and those whom revisit it time to time like myself. I wouldn't worry about it. Sometimes people get a little burned out but they come back to their favorites and others just have things to do for a while and maybe even others are having issues with the server thing. I wouldn't worry about it.

Not just UT2K4 dying off...

What I'm worried is PC gaming in general...

With UT2K4, its understandable, 5 year old game, people are bound to move on to newer things. But I'm concerned about the lackluster development in new PC oriented games.

The business model is changing. Its about economics in the end, consoles are supposedly more profitable with dorks paying 3x to play games. Pay for console. Pay for game. Pay for online connection through console. Pay for connecting to specific game server. Its crazy. I fear with the death of PC gaming, there will be a sharp decline in gaming innovation. No more end-user mods to vehicles and or weapons, no more custom maps. It feels like its going to be - pay for new maps, pay for new weapons the developer produces. Hopefully it never comes to that.

Nope, that won't happen.

If it ever gets to that, we would stick to the older games.

For the folks that decided to leave the community, that will happen, and there isn't much we can do about that, but the PC gaming community will not die. I assure you that.
The difference between successful people from others is
not in the lack of strength,
not in the lack of knowledge,
but rather in the lack of will.

Another oldie but goodie is Medal of Honor Allied Assault. I still play it regularly. It was put out in 2001 and the expansions out in 2002 and there are still multiple servers maxed out, and a huge mod/map building community like UT. There is an invented game type called "base builder" in that game where you spend the first 5 minutes of a round building barricades, modding the map, adding MGs, etc., and then you get to play the map with the mods you made.

If you are interested the "war chest" can be had for around 10-20 bucks. It includes the spearhead and breakthrough expansion packs. They also have a MoH 10th anniversary set that also includes MoH Airborne (which is also fun) and MoH Pacific Assault (which sucks IMO) Graphics are not out of this world, but the storyline/single player, as well as the multiplayer, is solid. This game was made by the design team who left the MoH series and formed Infinity Ward/CoD series.

Another game I love is Red Orchestra. It is based on the UT engine, and started as a mod for UT2004. It is now a standalone game, and often goes on sale on steam for 10-15 bucks. It is very realism based, as your character tires from running, gun sways, etc., but once you get over the learning curve it can be rewarding. The servers are not in abundance, but there are always one or two full ones at any time.

I also don't think PC gaming is going to ever fully die, but I definitely think it will be widdled down a bit by numbers and games available because of the demand consoles are creating. As much as I love my new PS3 (and Killzone 2), I will always come back to play UT2004, MoH, Red Orchestra, Crysis, etc. To me, why chose just one when you can have them all?
