just curious what some opinions were about having an ONS map or two without vehicles? No, I'm not trying to reinvent or take anything away from ONS as it is but a little variation would be cool. I do believe ONS could stand on its own without vehicles as a great gametype. I envision maps to be somewhat like symmetrical TAM (team arena master) maps with wider hallways and stuff to dodge behind for cover, more z-axis play too.
Other thoughts I have is to introduce a new gun, or a modified version of an existing gun that functions as a grenade launcher, different than the stock 2k4 grenade launcher in that you can be more precise with where you can throw the grenades with a larger blast area. Scenario: if you have a sniper above you shooting out a window you could sneak up and throw a grenade into the window and if he doesnt react fast enough he gets blown up. Sure, this sounds like a COD/Counterstrike like idea, but why not, it might be cool in UT?
I'm messing around with a "bonus" map that I may, or may not, release some time shortly after ONS-Downtown that will use many of the same assets and will be "No Vehicle ONS". I'm just wondering if there would be any interest?
no vehicle Onslaught maps?
my idea is very different than beer battle. Beer battle there is only a couple main corridors to get around the map. I would make multiple different paths to take to get from node to node. Beer Battle is very much of a choke point map because of the few corridors to take. My idea is more like an ONS-Floodgate like layout with lots of lifts, jump pads, and corners to hide behind.

I enjoy no vehicle maps. That said, I think they tend to work better when they're using low-HP nodes like Maelstrom-NV, as it's pretty boring to spend inordinate amounts of time taking down / building nodes, and players don't have infinite ammo to spend blasting down a 2000 health node.
No vehicle maps are fun, but there are too few of them. All I could come up with off the top of my head is BiggerBeerBattle, Maelstrom, and OperaHouse.
One of the potential problems is finding the right size. You cannot make the map too big (since you don't want to spend two minutes running to a node). But also you don't want it to become too small. Whenever I render over 15 players on screen at once, my frame rates drop tremendously. Also you don't want this map to be just another spamtastic map.

I also like no vehicle maps such as Maelstrom-NV. However, there are a lot of people who do not like these types of maps. A lot of players play ONS to use vehicles - and expect vehicles to be in the maps. I don't think it would be a good idea to add more no vehicle maps because of this.

I see no problem with adding more NV maps as long as they're good. Putting -NV in the name of the map might be a useful disclaimer for players who haven't seen it before though.
I mostly hear are fond statements of no vehicle maps. Most of the time, only ones that complain also like Tank Me Up maps. I don't think this will be a big issue.DW_ChocoCake wrote:I also like no vehicle maps such as Maelstrom-NV. However, there are a lot of people who do not like these types of maps.
But as Wail stated, the -NV suffix should be enough to give people a heads up.

In addition to the other maps mentioned herein, there's ONS-Foundry too. It's a bit more complex..several rooms, interesting tunnels, etc.
I like playing the occasional no vehicle map myself. Breaks up the monotony of tank & manta whoring that goes on traditionally... ;)
I'd say thumbs up, Sanchez...and yah, putting "NV" in the title would probably be a good idea too.
