thanks Cat your advice is Purrr-fect. yea i thought so too that issue could be hard to pinpoint and not necessarily the modem. good news is i don't play that racket with my cable company, i purchase my own hardware so i'm free to get my own. the modem's getting old so it most likely is the culprit so i think i'll just get a new one and work from there. shouldn't be system settings i think it's pretty optimal atm, and i honestly don't suspect the router, card or wiring atm. time i got a new modem anyway so it will be a good start.
the long route has annoyed me for a long time so i think i will try to get that fixed but i won't get my hopes up on that one.
btw do you have any free tool you can recommend to see where an ip is located at?

Free software to get ip location usually have tons of feature (like a Geo-location map and many others) and they usually are 30 days trial or not free. But, there is online tools that can help locate IP. This web site for instance: http://www.ip-adress.com/ip_tracer/
If you register (for free), you then gain access to many other useful tools, like reverse IP, trace Emails and Proxy search.
Using this web site I was able to get the location of my route path which start from Montreal, to San Fransisco, then to Chicago.

thanks for the info. well i called my isp and they won't do it so that's that, i am stuck with the odd route, but hey, my route as odd as it is, sounds shorter than frankie's, so proably not a dire problem. the small % of p/l with the cable modem early on also should not be any issue adversly effecting my connection but i would still like to get rid of it if possible. so i went out and got new cable modem and wire and hooked it up and yes i'm glad i did that as now the computer is detecting the network *much* faster than it used to, and the pl is a tad better, so getting a new modem sounds like a good thing overall, but *still* getting a very tiny % of p/l with it, more like 1 or 2 % now. the router is fine. i can even by-pass router and just hook pc up with the new cable directly the modem and still get the same small % pl. so that's very odd. i think the fact the router has 0% shows the nic and router are ok so i'm at a loss here. maybe tiny % is normal? you guys get total 0% pl with your modem after performing winmtr to it for say 1 whole minute? any suggestions?

yea i wouldnt think a little is bad, but you don't appear to have it at your modem itself, and that's what perked the Kat's pointy ears. anyways, the pl has stopped, seems it was just temporarily, i think the machine just needed a fresh boot after the new hardware install. now it's running like a champ 0 % pl so this is way cool.
heres my new trace. looks much better! 0 pl all the way down the line. i think we are done and thanks for all the help!!! :)
