The consoles, when they first come out can be ahead, but only for a short time, after that, they are behind. Money isn't the issue for me when choosing a console vs PC. Consoles are mainly for gaming only. Lets see you try to edit video from your vacation on your console. How about the number of game titles that are available. Regardless of what it can do, consoles are still toys. Look in the stores, they are where toys are... You would never go to a toy store to buy computer hardware. You would go there to find game consoles.....

Some people like me are real computer enthusiasts, we understand more about the computers, and it our hobby.
I am sorry I just picked up on a tiny little hint of condescension right there...
(that is me being sarcastic)

And what bugs me about that, is that he obviously knows little of what he speaks. He knows little about the PS3, and obviously little about me to consider himself a "real computer enthusiast," in comparison to myself, who obviously is not. But apparently I know a great deal about the PS3 that he does not.

As for the avatar...changed.

As for the article, I guess direct linking does not work for some odd reason.
But you can access it through this google search.
Top result entitled Holy Chip
http://www.google.com/search?q=forbes+cell+chip

From article:
The Cell chip, based on a design inspired by supercomputers, runs at least ten times as fast as Intel's most powerful Pentium. More important, Cell boasts a staggering fiftyfold advantage in handling graphics-intensive applications that will define the next generation of visual entertainment--blindingly fast and seductively immersive games, virtual-reality romps, wireless downloads, real-time video chat, interactive TV shows with multiple endings and a panoply of new services yet to be dreamed up.

And Finally! Rein from Epic Games commenting on PC vs. PS3 for ut2007
“People are going to be totally blown away when the get a PS3 and play it,” Rein continued. “PC gamers are used to having the absolute cutting edge graphics – console players are just going to say ‘Wow!’” As for how PS3 will ultimately run the game? “When you see the [final] game running on PS3, it’s going to be smoother [than on the PC]. You’re not going to have the operating system in the way and all the other things that can make a PC game look ‘poppy,’” he said. Driving home the point, he added: “People ask me what the next generation is going to offer other than better graphics, and I say ‘Stop! Go back and look at the graphics!’ Don’t downplay that. People spend $600 on a video card to get this kind of performance on their PC, and this is a potentially sub- $500 console!”

As i said before, most people do not design maps, and a high end PC is not even a prerequisite for that.
Secondly PS3 will have the capability of storage, so maps will be downloadable.
Thirdly the PS3 is HiDef (which they have had several press releases about)

I agree with the antiquated idea of console vs. PC, but times are a changing. So please do your research before commenting, and please do not condescend.
If you do not want me to be hostile dont comment on my posts like I am some moron, show respect and it will be returned. AND do not assume to understand my abilities with a computer.
By the way I stuck the PS3 comment as a helpfull piece of advice. Maybe before reacting in such a derogatory manner you should ask someone to flesh out their argument

I have to add this because I really have to drive this home. Consoles are not heading to the way they were in the past.
Also to make sure people believed Sony when they said the PS3 is not a gaming machine, Kutaragi plans to install Linux on the harddrive in fact, he envisions other operating systems running on the PS3's CPU.

This is a PC as well as a console

I would also like to point out that you will also get the Blu-Ray player, which is the next gen in disk tech, and will replace dvd. Good luck getting a Blu-Ray player that does all that for under $400.00 when it begins full adoption.

Regardless of what you say, a console is still a toy. Its just to play games. Simple as that. Blu-Ray, like everything else will be cheap in a few years. I have no immediate need for that amount of storage for my computer. Besides, as I've said before, I couldn't care less how much it is. If I want it bad enough, I'll buy it for whatever price it is. I don't care.

And if your installing Linux on it, then maybe it isn't a console. And as I said, I would NEVER buy a console. They are just toys. As far as HiDef, I already am playing UT2004 in high def with my OLD computer system. High def is 1920X1080 resolution. My monitor is 1920X1200 (actually a hair higher than hi definition.) And thats on my current system before I upgrade it soon.

How much a graphics card cost doesn't matter to me. If I want to spend $600 or $2000 on a graphics card, its my call. It's my money to spend. I earned it.

I don't care what the PS3 can do in the least. Its a proprietary closed architecture system. I also don't like mac's because of this also. Not to say they are bad or anything, its something I would NEVER buy. (I, not you.) I like building my own system from the ground up. Really, you need not take offense so easily. I never meant to offend anyone. Your statement can be meant just as offensive as any of mine. Not many people with consoles read the forums. The topic was to discuss computer hardware requirements for UT2007. Hinting to tell people to buy a cheap console can be insulting. Thats no different than telling BMW owners to buy a ford Focus, they are cheap to own and take you from point A to B just the same.

To take full advantage of HDTV's ability to render spectacular clarity and detail, you must find an LCD, plasma, or DLP device that has a native resolution of either 1,280 x 720 pixels (720 lines progressively scanned with a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio) or "1080i" (1920 x 1080), which represents a 16:9 widescreen image with 1920 pixels across each of 1080 interlaced scan lines. These are the only two High Definition formats defined by the HDTV standard. All network broadcasters use one or the other for their HD programs. For instance, ABC and Fox broadcast in 720p, while CBS, NBC, and PBS use 1080i. Likewise, cable and satellite networks will use one or the other: HBO, HDNet, DiscoveryHD, and Showtime use 1080i, whereas ESPN uses 720p. Broadcasters choose one or the other for different reasons.

As a computer expert and intel partner I know what is possible.

With current tecnologies it is NOT possible to run any device !0 times faster than current intel processors.

Anyone saying so is doing one of 3 things:

Blowing smoke, Repeating gossip, or lying for some percieved gain.

BE advised there is a lot of misinformation on the internet.

Repeating this stuff may cause you to visit this fellow: :thin:

Alright first of all I know your going to keep posting until you feel you've flexed your techno guru might, and I know I have shown you up and you feel a little embarassed, but let me explain. First of all you dont need to explain to me about hdtv. Because I know Sony will have it, not just one display but two!
Meaning you can hook up two hdtvs to your system!
Now I brought up the PS3 as an alternative to gross upgrades needed to run ut2007. Which I have proven is more capable than the modern PC, which Epic has also stated!
Secondly my post was not about your wanting to build a PC at home. I don't care how much money you have to spend, that wasn't the point. The fact that you are what you believe to be a competent computer "guru." Has nothing to do with the fact that the PS3 will outperform a modern PC. If you want to stick with substandard equipment for the job, go right ahead. Your personal hobbies really have absolutely nothingto do with playing UT2007. Hell get the dual core and make your PC into a furnace as well, maybe the watercooler you installed (I know you did, I just know it) will actually serve a purpose.
Thirdly research the product before you criticize it. You obviously know nothing about the PS3 or the tech that drives it. The cell is open the devkits have already been released for it. Linux has been ported. blade servers are in the works.

Now here is the PS3's HDTV
http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/11821
The PS3 will also display at 1080p in a 16:9 ratio. It will support two video outputs, meaning if you happen to have two HDTVs lying around, you can connect them together and have a combined 32:9 HDTV panoramic display.
WOW!
Now for $400 you can spend on the PS3 vs. the over $1500 for a system that still won't play as well as the PS3 and wont play Bluray, which one would you recommend to someone who was on a budget?!?!?!?
Now stop posting, I don't care that your hobby is "computing" or whatever. That wasnt the point of my post. By the way I built my own system as well. I also hacked an Iopener and a fujitsu stylistic. I love making cool crap out of old tech.
For those of you that are worried your system will not support ut2007 check out the PS3 it will do more that some of the best PCs and for a few extra bucks it will become a PC.
I don't care what the PS3 can do in the least.
Exactly why you should have never responded to my original post
I like building my own system from the ground up.
I have built my own system since Windows 3.1. 1991, I think? I used to program on the old TRS80 (Trash80, do you know what that is?)
Hinting to tell people to buy a cheap console can be insulting. Thats no different than telling BMW owners to buy a ford Focus
I think I have thoroughly pointed out that the PS3 is the Rolls Royce your PC would be, I don't know Geo Metro. Your analogy is bad anyway because BMW hasnt made a decent car since the late 80's. It sells completely on branding.

Man you should go after Forbes, and IBM, and Toshiba, and Sony, and IGN, etc etc etc. Did you even read the article?!?!
Do you even know the tech behind cell?

Questionable, especially since there is no substance to the statement outside of that. We all are who we want to be, are wenot , in the internet world, substance is the only thing that carries weight in the internet argument. The fact that I linked to MANY articles covering the capabilities of the cell chip and the PS3 really makes me wonder why you have not brought any of them up.

I don't feel the least bit embarrased about anything, why should I be embarassed.

If the PS3 was a Rolls Royce, it wouldn't matter, its a console as of now. Its not a computer, its a toy. Its still proprietary. Your confusing computers with consoles.....lol

And good for you for having a trash80, the commodorer vic 20 or the atari 400 or 800 were so much better. I wouldn't touch a TRS-80 from Radioshack with a ten foot pole. Even the Atari 2600 had a programming cartridge that could outdo a trash-80.

How you can argue about a system that isn't even out is beyond me.

Its still a toy. No matter what you say. Now run along.
