Ah yes! Tiny little strands of glass...carrying all that data as light! Fantastic!
The city where I live was one of the early installations for Verizon. They worked all last summer putting in new infrastructure. Out at the end of my driveway is a box in the ground with drops for my house and the two on either side of me.
So...I'm hoping that in the next two months or so, I'll have everything ready inside the house for their installers. It's been too blasted hot to go crawling about in the attic! Good Christmas present, don't you think??
They are also offering DirectTV through the fiber. So there'll probably be a couple of DVRs in the offing too.
Prices for the 10Mbps down and 2Mbps up are pretty similiar to the DSL and ISP that are in place here at the house. Everyone that I've talked to down here loves it. There are some pretty good forums and reviews at

.. Electric signals can be transmitted at least four times faster than the speed of light.. thats. ..more than four billion kilometres per hour.-- Light cant never beat that.. BUT - any signal at that speed would be useless , wont ever contain any good kind of information cuz it gets distorted along the way :( ... So yeah by now optic cables beat the electrons speed for 1 third on velocity .. If that service were around here Id surely get me my 50mb/ dl package .. That'd be insane.. even tho so much speed doesnt mean that every site I visit and every file I download from some FTP server will be transfering me data at 50mb/s .. thats not gonna happen ..

DUCK! Oh wait guess I shoulda said that before I shot you huh?

Well i put the order in today, for 10mb/2mb service. Its the same price that im paying now for DSL so its reasonable. I could also upgrade later and it wont affect my contract, other then the new price. The person on the phone made an intresting statement. 4 hours is average, becuase of the sheer amount of time only one install is done a day. Also if you have any pre-existing contracts for dsl service with verizon they will cancel them with no fee, and give you a new one. Sounds like a win/win situation to me, Its scedualed for the sept 11th, which im thinking of having them push it off a day. When i get the service i will put a review camparing ping and hops, and any general connection experiance.

Will be interested to hear your story, Hornet. Unless you made a special arrangement, they're going to pull all the copper out of your house which means there's no going back to POTS. Which I find a little alarming.
I'm kicking around the possibility of replacing my Comcast internet and TV with Fios internet and TV since Comcast likes to do their unannounced system upgrades when I have critical fragging to do. Giving up my established comcast email address is the biggest barrier to switching.

Well im acutally intrested in fios tv, but its not available here yet. Im sure it just needs to be updated in whatever database. The phone line thing im ok with, verizon is the major carrier here. Everyone that provides service does it through their lines. Yes i agree with you that it would be better if i can keep both, but copper line just isnt nessacary anymore. Besides way back when copper lines were first installed im sure there was law passed that made sure im not stuck to a specific provider, im sure the same will be applied to fiber. Someone in my neighborhood got it installed, it looks like a bunch of "south of the border" people were actively installing it.

Why in lords name would they do that . All that copper can still be used for your in house network . In reality they couldn't pull it out . But they could chop it . That would be vandalous. You would also have to take into consideration people that rent their living space. What if the next people don't want it .Will be interested to hear your story, Hornet. I would think you have your story wrong on that . It is just so wrong on so many levels.

I don't have personal experience on this, but if you google on "fios and copper" you'll find that the default action is to cut your copper. A May 2005 Washington Post article says
A May 2005 CNET article notes that Verizon's phone service rates remain the same even though you're now on fiber. But you're pretty much locked in to Verizon for phone service for the foreseeable future at this point (except for VoIP).When Verizon installs the fiber-optic connection to your home, the technicians cut down the old, copper-line connection to the telephone network and will not replace it if you later decide to cancel.
