Recently I have had trouble connecting to a site because my IP get caught in a net of blocked IPs thanks to a brute force attack trying to take down the server. I was able to contact the admin and he suggested:

If you're on cable or DSL, chances are you can force a refresh of the IP address you got from your service provider through your cable modem or DSL modem's set up page.

Now, I feel like a total n00b, but how do I do this? I'm running Windows XP.

Well, it depends.

First, are you sure you are on a DHCP originated IP?
If not, then you need to talk to your ISP.

If it is, then you need to know if you are connected directly or from behind a firewall/router?

If direct, open a DOS window and issue the following command:
ipconfig /release

then either reboot or issue the following command:
ipconfig /renew

While you *could* get away with just a '/renew' I like to force the release first to ensure that the lease has truly gone.

If connected via a firewall/router:
use firewall/router interface to renew your lease.

edit: This does not guarantee a new IP or an IP outsode the blocked range. To ensure that you would need to talk to your ISP to force it to happen if the above doesn't work.

- As Snaggle said , But for this to work you need to

:: after releasing the IP you actually hold, Just leave your modem , off for 2 or 3 days , the more you leave it off the more your IP will be changed- You can force the ip without having to wait , But that will have to leave you still in the same Block of Hanged IP's , since you will be able to change only the last 3 numbers of your address - wich will be no good in your case , besides of the need of some tricky software .. I recomend the first option if your willing to live without Internet for almost a week , but it's worth it -

Leaving the modem off for about 30 mins, you'll probably get a new IP. You shouldn't have to leave it off for a couple days. Go to http://whatismyipaddress.com/ to check your current IP, then leave if off for a while and go back to that site to check your IP again.
