First of all I am not sure I have ever seen a map as poorly made as this, it is, frankly, appalling. The glass allows you to see through the terrain; the cage mesh does not line up; the skybox is just a black box with a moon, not even a skyball has been used; the lifts clip through the tubing; it is riddled with 'toe stubbers' and sizing is misaligned to the size of a player.
Second it has nothing to do with a rabbit hutch.
Third ... you moaned about my lighting?
Fourth, a hampster wouldn't be able to navigate verticle tubing, so therefore inconsistant with its subject matter.
Sorry to have a go but it is rather insulting to refer me to such a poor map.
I don't want you to intimidate this map. That'll make things impossible to build unique maps since pretty much every theme has been built before. I'm just pointing this map out to jog your memory. Usually looking at maps like these may spark a bulb and provide you a great idea.
When a map could use some more decoration, the best way is to just ... browse through existing maps. Yes, don't make windows that allow you to see through terrain. Yes, make sure you align the textures. Yes, put details into the skybox. Yes, make your map relevant to the theme, but by seeing preexisting maps (even if they are ugly or not) they may supply a good deal of ideas. You may relate the glass ball with a different object, and you could say, "Hey, this new object is something that'll fit nicely in my map." Or better yet, you could say, "Ewww, this object here looks horrible. I bet I could build something much better than this."
Some notes about HampsterDance.
The reason in why this may lack in detail is because it was converted from UT99 to 2k4. I think the mapper just enjoyed the gameplay, and didn't take much care with the visual aspect of this map.
Aside from the unsourced lighting, the lighting isn't bad. Notice the shadows branching from the blocks at the bottom, or the grated shadows projected on the floor when you're looking from above.

Just to point out one thing. I've kept rabbits before, and they're hutches were empty... Bowl and Bottle - which is less than what Dynadin put in. We had a look at sites for Rabbit toys... and we got Cardboard tubes. So it is definately theme relative for the UK at least.
As for the hamster map, again I've never seen so many rediculous things in a pets cage. My mouse had a small home to sleep in and a box to climb on - my hamsters had a house and wheel :) Probs cos I played with them more. The map looks more like Kid Zone than a hamster cage XD
But I did notice the comment about the ivy... Ivy doesnt grow on the inside of hutches very well even abandoned. No light and wire is harder for the ivy to attach to than wood which permeates water and wire doesnt ;) thought I see where you were going for ideas, but I think that map sparks more horrids than nices.

lol yeah you got a point about all the toys placed in the hamster cage. I think the mapper failed to scale the map properly, and made the cage larger than it needs to be. So as a result, random stuff was placed to fill in the empty space [/prediction]
I should rephrase in what I said earlier about the vines. Since the cage is placed outdoors, you could have a couple bush branches growing through the cages, or the floor could be cracked open, enabling room for the plants underneath to grow inside the cage.
I do see that this map is preferred to be nicer than what I'm throwing out there. I don't really build nice maps so you got me stomped at the moment.
But I did hear that you or Dynadin might be going on vent tomorrow. I might come up with a few suggestions over the time period or not, but I'll do my best effort to chat with ya ;)

We should both *Fingers Crossed* be on tomorrow sometime so yeah sounds like a plan.
I have also been trying to think of a few things to put in the map that are consistant with a lived in cage, lets say for this map, the rabbit is on holiday (If you havent guessed who the influential woman is yet lol...)
But Dyna has had bigger fish to fry atm... :P
