I guess my question would be then since I can get the opteron 254 at below retail would it make for an effective home machine since it would be able to double as a server if charter ever gets fiber optics out here in BFE? I can get pretty much any type of ram at about half retail cost so thats really not a factor.
Sorry to have changed the subject of this forum topic so much.

For a home machine (or a server which does not have a very high requirement for a single core) I would go dual core. Either a dual core 1* Opteron, or go with 2 2* dual core opterons if you need 4 cores.
