How hard is mapping compared to something else in the computer world?

I recently went through training for Macromedia studio, and I am starting to use flash a lot. Is it an interface like that, or much more complex and code heavy?

To answer your question Defiant - I like crazy, off-the-hook maps. For example, I played a death match map that was the old wolfenstein in 3D levels converted. It was crazy. I also really like levels with a lot of obstacles in them, that are big enough to need vehicles, but not so big that playing on foot is pointless or arduous. I also like some nuke heavy maps that have 3-4 nuke pick-up sites that can be accessed by foot.

I'm excited to see what you guys come up with!

I'll check those links out, but it will have to be during the late summer and my vacation, but 2007 will prob be here, so we'll see.

I have the DVD version of UT2004, so does the second disk have that software?

OK back to the original topic .... What we like in a map

I think Number 1 is Flow . If there is to much crap in the way it really makes for a crappy map .. also a wide open map can make it really hard to play and not die 45,000 times. Looking for maps with obsticles .. but ones that just obstruct direct fire from halfway across the map on the nodes.

Second ... Even the vehicles out . If the map is big put the tanks towards the middle and make the aircraft towards the power cores ... Plus weapons lockers. Flak rocket on the ruff terain .. shock mini and lightning on the wide open. And Link guns at all the nodes .. stupidest thing ive seen yet is nodes with no link guns near by. theres a start .. I will add more as I think of it

The second DVD of the 2 DVD set has ALL the video tutorials of map-making and has a limited edition of Maya. There are tutorials on how to use Maya also. There are about 6-10 hours of videos on that DVD, they are in DIVX format, and theres the DIVX installer on the Second DVD to watch them. One thing to remember is if you have Firefox set as your default browser, you will need to put Internet Explorer as your default browser before the tutorials will come up. Firefox acts like its working, but you don't see any video. Took me awhile to figure out why it didn't work at first. :read:

If you know how to use Maya, that would be a great start as far as being able to create your own static meshes. Knowing Photoshop or similar programs will help for making or adding new textures.

Sounds very cool Defiant. I will prodly beta test them for you here.

Two ideas I would pursue if I had the time (and any semblance of mapping skills)

1. Frag-Mart - ONS in a grocery store, with nodes down the various isles, and in the various departments. Cheesy muzak in the background, every once in a while interrupted by a lady saying stuff like "Cleanup in isle 3!"

2. A vertical ONS map - I have not seen vertical ONS maps at all. I was thinking it would be cool to have one in a highrise which was half finished and abandonded. The lower floors could be more completed, and the upper floors could be a mere skeleton. This map would be a sniper's heaven, but I wouldn't see too much opportunity for vehicles.

Sounds like fun Defiant! I would like some peeks on the progress, send me the zip of the map as it progresses.
