Ubuntu - even cludges like me can make this one work! ;)

Vent and Linux - sadness Ventrilo will work with WINE...kinda...but it only will use the Speex codec, same goes for you MAC users (lower quality audio code imo) whereas our current Vent server uses the GSM codec...much better audio quality codec (and yes...there are proprietary issues with MS). Convoluted worlds at the moment.

Trowa!!! Nice to see you on the boards, Welcome!!

- Indeed I got Vent to work with wine .. after alot of research I got it to work but as KK pointed the speex codec only , but I also got the lernout&hauspie coded rolling .. both codecs suck big time compared to GSM's wich is the one that everyone is in love with -- so by now we are pretty much damned ...

-- The linux version of the client , I bet it's not gonna be released, since for the Vent people would be like giving away their precious work to the well known linux haxors, wich will inmediately make it better .. and they just wouldn't take that

Damnidge,

I like the album. It took me a while to really get into Kid A, Amnesiac and Hail To the Thief. But this one I got into right away. My fav albums are still Ok Computer and The Bends, but I'm really getting into In Rainbows now.

KK,

thanks for the welcome :)

It's not just the fact of people fiddling with their software. It's also the aspect that ventrilo is a program that is highly profitable, companies pay to host ventrilo servers.

DistroWatch

Though one may really want to know "what's the best distribution for me?", tossing it out into a public forum mostly permits us to validate our own decisions. Few of us have substantive experience with a variety of distributions.

DistroWatch has a nice and evenhanded rundown of the major distributions. Users should select one that sounds right and try it.

I have a minority opinion that the desktop experience is pretty much the same for all distributiions, but it's the installation process that varies. The hardware detection, in particular, can vary wildly between distros.

Ventrilo under Linux

The Ventrilo Windoze software is actually pretty easy to install under Linux using Wine. I was able to google quite specific information about a year ago.

The devilishly difficult part is that the gui doesn't work right. It takes some violent and well-placed mouse jerks to save your configuration. Once you get things set you definitely do NOT want to go back and tweak.

-- Well , the UI owns Windows like this with ease// now I just need 3 more monitors - I really like the fact that theres no freaking way to screw your pc, by browsing the Internet , no Spyware, no Addware , no Malware , not a damn thing even after visiting websites wich are know to cause this in a Windows environment -- ..
