Got a glimpse of Fallout 3 for a few hours today. It captures the Fallout visual aesthetic to a degree, but the gameplay feels very much like Oblivion. If you liked Oblivion, I guess that's fine, but for people like me who thought Oblivion was insipid, it's not so fine.
Not only that, but I think Bethesda misinterpreted what Fallout was all about and what made it uniquely Fallout (that is, the nature of Fallout). V.A.T.S. is a strange (and somewhat broken) system given the real-time nature of the game's combat (can't aim as well in real-time, yet V.A.T.S. is like playing the game in easy mode). Also, we see a resurgence in the old Bethesda tactic of using a stupid questionnaire to determine "who you are," except this time, the questions seem like a juvenile attempt at capturing Fallout's grim humor.
EDIT: Combat also feels too close to Oblivion's, to the point of feeling like I'm just playing Oblivion with guns.
Any other opinions? </rant></troll>

Yeah, I heard these comments to a degree from a few of my students. I have yet to play it, but it seems all the games I have played since UT3 all have the same thing in common - they are console games ported to the computer - at that just doesn't work.
PS - on an unrelated topic my post count is showing correctly!!! I guess the new version of bb fixed this?
