Microsoft made the first release candidate of Windows 7 available for free download on Thursday. In an unprecedented move for the company, the software will run on a user's PC for more than a year.

Windows 7 RC1 can be downloaded now by MSDN, TechBeta and TechNet subscribers, and the general public will be able to download it on May 5. There is no limit to how many copies can be downloaded. The software will run until June 1, 2010, in what a Microsoft marketing manager described to ZDNet UK as a "try before you buy" scenario.

"There is no cap on the amount of downloads [of Windows 7 RC1]," Laurence Painell said in a prebriefing session on Wednesday. "However, we only recommend that people with a reasonable amount of IT knowledge use it."

This is very cool. I downloaded and played around with the 64-bit beta and liked what I saw. They seemed to have taken vista and really polished it.

Also damaged - a while back I asked you about 64-bit vista and what discs would possibly work with my free software. Turns out I was able to get a legit 64-bit retail ultimate and my 32-bit free key from the Microsoft event works fine! I'm rocking 64-bit Crysis Wars with full use of my memory now and love it.

Glad to hear you got it working Damnidge

The new RC is awesome and there is a very nice increase in speed performance from Beta to the RC. I really think MS is going to put out an awesome OS this time. I have heard reports of the RTM going out between Sept 09 and Jan 2010. But from some people they are saying between Oct or Nov 09.

Well I downloaded something off of demonoid =/
It's Windows 7 Ultimate. No strings attached. I got an activation code so it last for more than 30 days. =D Is this version different than RC1? If so, how?

Also, I'm in love with Windows 7 compared to vista. It still eats up my hard drive, Surprisingly it is faster than XP Professional on my computer. I can't figure out why my RAM is always at 67%. I only have 512MB.

Uh Marbles....your at the lowest requirement for the OS, it is using almost all of your RAM. listen very carefully, if your going to play with next gen programs and games you will have to upgrade your system. You will not be able to run the OS and any of the newer games. Then you will be posting with questions why this or that won't work.

So take my advice your system should have minimum of 2 gigs Ram, no matter what you get.

No shame, no dishonor, will run away to fight another day!

Hmmm demonoid isn't that a bit torrent site? Bad place to get things from in the 1st place. There may be no strings attached but 'm sure theres plenty of viruses and malware. If you get the new RC of Windows 7 get it from Microsofts site because the expiration date if I am not mistaken is June 2010 and you can down load as many keys as you want and the the best part is that expiration date is well past the time that the RTM is going to be shipped out to the public. So you can really hammer Windows 7 before you even think of buying it. As far as your ram being at 67% 512m really isn't going to cut it although I ran windows 7 Beta 1 in a virtual machine environment with 1 gig and it ran ok. But as cheap as memory is today you can get the following at NewEgg

OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual for $60.99 with a $25 rebate bringing the cost down to $35.99.

You will see a nice improvement over that 512m of ram you currently have.

Good luck and enjoy.
