Ok, so I need help! I want to get a digital SLR for my birthday (20th of this month..woohoo!)and Christmas. I think I've narrowed it down to the Nikon D5000 or the Canon Rebel T1i. A family member just bought the T1i and seems to <3 it. They both have their pluses and minuses. I currently have a Nikon point and shoot and <3 it but I'm a total noob when it comes to SLRs period. Any input would be greatly appreciated! :)

My department at work owns a Nikon D80 that I use to shoot my students artwork, performances, etc. I absolutely love it, and the picture quality it provides.

For me, if we are talking point and shoot compact cameras then I'd say Canon ELPHs. If we are talking full blown DLSR, I'd have to say Nikon because I've used both brands and I've always preferred the Nikon's overall feature set and feel.

Im using a d90 the 5000 is a smaller brother to the d90. Great cameras. The first run of 5000s had issues but they have been resolved. Go here if you want to read what users of the Nikon series are saying. There is also a Cannon group. Cheap

Thanks for the info! I've read that the D5000 has many of the same components of the D90 which is why I like it. I like the D90 but it's still a little too expensive for me. I am kinda scared off by the recalls. I've been reading that even Best Buy is still selling some of the recalled ones and the last thing I want is to buy it and not be able to use it. You know? :) Anyways, I ALMOST bought the Canon T1i because I found a pretty good deal on eBay but then again I found a good deal on Amazon for the Nikon D5000 plus it has an extra lens. Also if I bought the Canon I could share lenses with my family member who has the same camera. Decisions decisions. :)

I had a nikon d40, d50 and played around with them for a while I found out that I sucked terribly at photography. I would of loved it if I had any kind of skillz lol.
