I just joined the MMIII server to find that one of my maps, DM-UNO-The_Meatlocker, was altered. I don't mind when someone alters one of my maps, however the map was renamed and my name taken off of it. IF you don't mind fixing this issue, I would be happy.

I'm not involved with MM3, so I don't know exactly what's going on here. I assume that someone edited your level and changed the name to DM-The_MeatLocker. I am not condoning or condemning this particular decision. I tend agree that a mapper has the prerogative insofar as how their work is used.
However, putting your name in the map filename is pretty tacky. The place for map authors to put their name is in the level info. As long as the attribution in the level info is unchanged, I don't see a problem. Nothing belongs in the filename of a map other than the name of the map and the version info, if any. Map author names just confuse the issue and make it difficult to remember what the map is actually called when trying to vote for levels.

While I would find your arguement somewhat valid, I would have to disagree with your comment. Tacky would be telling someone that they have done something wrong with thier own work. I believe that we all have the right to designate our work as we please. Coming from a guy who titles his own work with his name, I would think you would see my point as well.
I am not here to start an arguement, or debate anyone else's opinions on this matter. I just simply requested to have the title contain my name as it was originally designated.

Yeah, I don't see this as really worth arguing over.uno_chaos wrote:While I would find your arguement somewhat valid, I would have to disagree with your comment. That said, regarding my own work, there are really only two things I've worked on that actually have my "name" on them which is a pretty small minority all things considered. Most of my code packages are actually EONSWhatever, and none of the maps I've created or worked on have my name on them.
Additionally, players don't ever really need to interact with code packages beyond downloading them from a redirect, so the name is kind of irrelevant, whereas map names is something that players do deal with every time map voting occurs. I know this particular issue came up on Monster Mash 1 & 2 before as we had tons of maps which were DM-XYZ-BobsMap, or DM-{AA}-Alphaville, etc. In isolation this is not an issue, but at some point it just becomes obscene trying to remember all the different conventions that every single mapmaker might use that can affect the presentation of the maps in the list.
I find the best way is to put a little signature somewhere in the map. A logo or your name somewhere unobtrusive. That way you will always know it is yours, and people can see it. And you REALLY know if someone wants to steal your map because they will remove it.
To bring about the end you have to start at the beginning.
I'm the admin of the server, and I've been away for a while, sorry about that. The main reason I changed the name was just because I'd changed a few weapons and music (don't remember what exactly), and I already had the map called UNO_The_Meatlocker on there (which is still on there, just not in rotation), so I needed to differentiate your version from the modified one. Changing it back isn't a problem... I'll just have to hack through it manually in the .ini files since I'm having a problem with WebAdmin at the moment.
Personally though, I'd say it does more to mess up the alphabetical ordering and make the map harder for players to find than it does to promote yourself... but like I said, I'll change it back as soon as I can.

You could name it The_Meatlocker-UNO

There are only 10 kinds of people in the world. Those who read binary, and everyone else.
4013 is only a FAD
And 2989? Well that's just BAD
