Anyone out there running UT on top of Vista yet? Just wondering how it is looking from a gaming standpoint. Drivers and all.
Also, any idea how DirectX10 is going to influence things? Probably not until UT2007, I would imagine...
Vista...
I have Vista loaded on 2 computers to test it out. The only thing is that none of the 2 computers have a 3D video card, so aero is not being used.
The first one I tried it with was an old 500mhz PIII with 768mb ram, and 15GB hard drive. Its runs fine, not as quick as XP, but it is O.K.
The second is on a fairly recent Dell widescreen laptop. I bought a second hard drive to substitute for the factory drive so I can test Vista on without having to re-do everything should Vista cause problems. It works pretty good on that, and runs about as fast as XP did. Planning on taking that laptop with me on vacation, that will be the real test. I also plan on bringing the origional hard drive that is loaded with XP in case of problems, I can swap out the hard drive and move on. While I don't have UT on it yet, all the other software I installed on it works well. Since I don't have a 3D video card in the laptop, I will never be able to know how it works. I had tried 3 times to buy a 3D video card for the HP Pavillion, but I cannot find a compatible one that is the older AGP style 2X4X (??) or AGP 2X. (I got the HP as a freebie, works perfectly...no flames please...)
I have the latest RC1 version build 5600 if I'm not mistaken.
If I ever decide to get Vista when its out, I still aim to keep one partition or hard drive with XP on it for awhile. I think theres still alot of work that will need to be done after its released, both performance wise and bugwise.... I hope I'm proven wrong.

Interesting..
Thanks!
Thanks!
I built a new test system just for Vista beta's. I didn't spend the money for a high end card for it, so it only has a 8 pipeline pci express 256 mb nvidia 3d card. (6600GT) Anyhow, when I get time (not this weekend), I will install ut2004 and see how it goes.
I have the Vista RC2 version currently.
Heres the test system I built last week:
AMD64 4600 dual core CPU, MSI socket 939 NForce 4 chipset mobo, 2 GB Corsair 400mhz 3-3-3-8 memory, NVidia GForce PCI Express 6600GT w/256 mb, Western Digital 10,000 rpm 150GB sata drive with NCQ, DVD Ram and +/- drive with lightscribe in a black Antec Sonata II case. (Soundblaster X-Fi on order)
I had a few extra parts lying around. (hard drive, dvd drive, and video card) Got a great deal on the mobo which I paid less than $50.00 and its brand new.
I believe it should run well on this test computer. From what Microsoft has said, it should run about 10-15% slower than the same game system running XP. So, for the most part, if you have a good system, you shouldn't really notice that things will be any different.

Microsoft said 10-15% - people are telling me on current computers it's closer to 50% speed. It's UGLY.
When it comes to UT2004, try looking at this simple chart:
Best --> Worst
Stripped-down Gentoo w/Nvidia
Other Linux w/Nvidia
XP w/ATI or NVidia
Stripped-down Gentoo w/Ati
Other Linux w/ATI
Vista

Ive been quite tempted to load vista onto my machine but havent yet bit the bullet, speed wont really be an issue but im worried about driver compatability.
Have many drivers been released for Vista yet ?

Im running it on my newest home PC and while the OS sucks it seems to run UT with not much problems as I can tell. I have an intergrated GPU atm which is temporary so its hard to tell how it effects FPS but play in general is just fine.

I won't change to Vista unless necessary, that's what i recommend most people to do.
I'm even thinking about skipping Vista and it's unreasonable demands and drain ability from your system, and go right to the OS after that, which would be Windows 7.

This is an old thread but still im glad it was brought up. I did load up vista for a while and im glad I did it noticed that my hard drive was about to die and let me know !!!! I was able to back up data etc b4 it did. +1 vista.
On the flip side the layout confused me and they made a lot of unnessisary changes which annoyed the hell out of me. Things just stopped working and many programs were incompatible. -1 vista
I have to say tho great work by alienware they assured me when I bought my rig that the machine would be 100% vista compatible. And it was every driver baring my sound car was updated correctly and everything ran perfectly, I downloaded the sound card driver my self and that worked perfectly too. So with a reasonably up to date machine id say drivers shouldnt be a worry as long as ure using main stream hardware.
I have since reverted back to XP at least untill some big SP's are released for vista.
