What makes a map fun.

Time for a more philosophical thread. As we continue this map project i've noticed maps that are part of it aren't getting voted much. This thread is an attempt to shed light on what the community thinks is fun, not versus what we (map editors/makers) think is so.

I think what I find as fun is not what most of the people on the pub server find as fun.
I like the larger maps with plenty of vehicles and multiple pathways. They usually provide for some good strategy. Grit is fun when it is not laggy. I also enjoy DesertedSands. That used to be a popular map, but it seems to have fallen out of favor.
I am not a huge fan of the Bitchslap/Dreamus/ChainIsle maps, though they can be good for a bit. Just not back to back.
Then there are the maps that are too large. I forget what its name is but it is a snow map with oil pipes running around. It just takes way too long to get around in that map.

Not sure it's possible to answer the general question of what makes a map fun. General good practices are multiple paths and, in my opinion, a balance between the power of infantry and vehicles.
As far as not being voted for or being voted for -- Popularity's a kind of fickle thing. No matter how good a map is, I'm not going to have fun playing it against bots or if my team gets wiped out in 30 seconds.

Define fun…lol
Ok, I think we got two types of maps that I consider to be “fun”.
Small maps; where you can kill a lot of people with lots lots of guns i.e.:
Dreamus
Bitchslap
Chain
DeathDome
Medium/Large maps with lots of vehicles and lot lots of guns i.e.:
Desertsands
Tropic
Adara/both versions
Sunrise
Dria
Ahebban
Adding Tanks is very helpful too, because it allow newbie’s (like me) to kill oldies like you (DW…whatever) this is why I support vehicles and for me is very fun when I’m able to kill any of you guys or guys like Choco, E-bola, Masterofpuppets, KM, Urtho and the list goes on. Hey I know the frequent users of the server, mmm if all of them use the SVA tag maybe we could have an even scrim he he…
C u guys on the server, if am allow, cause lately is very crowed.

I don't consider deserted sands fun. Yes its large, and it contains the various vehicles. However the map lacks on game play. The node setup is atrocious, terrain is not very interesting. Both the node setup and terrain offer little strategic value.
The maps i believe your referring too is dryice-32p. It was edited by the titan community. Its just obnoxiously large.
Here is something we should throw into the fray, thoughts on super weapons?

I am not a huge fan of the superweapons (especially the deemer) on ONS. This is really true for an unfamiliar map. It makes it so that the one guy who knows where it is can make a huge impact on the map.
Also, when the map has a straight set of links (like the original dreamus) and everyone is fighting over 1 node, it just gets frustrating.

Yes but realize that dreamus was amongst the most voted maps along with minus tank.

A fun map? It should have some of these:
The option to flank your enemies, like have two or three lines of nodes that are intersecting but not hard to understand.
Cicadas! Raptors! AIRPOWER!!! Yeah the only downside to that is that the score of pilots generally isn't that high.
Superweapons? Yes. It's fun to shoot down the deemer in the last second, or land a headshot on the fool with the ion/target painter.
And finally, lots of flak/link.
I remember thinking up more when I started reading this thread, but I honestly can't recall.
