What we need is a 3d game benchmarking program that makes sense. For example these companies could say...
You need 3000pts in "3d-Hornetmark-08" minimum and 5000pts recommended.
But I guess since there are so many variables that would/could/should influence the score this wouldn't really be that possible.

+1 on all points, especially the one where you say it won't work (unfortunately).DW_Hornet wrote:What we need is a 3d game benchmarking program that makes sense. For example these companies could say...

I sure hope Epic makes some in depth recommendations regarding CPU and dual core. If not on the box, then at least on the website. "3.4 recommended with dual core a plus!" is a cop out, and ambiguous at the least.
My gut feel:
If they have truly split off multiple threads and have the work divided fairly equally across the threads, then you will be able to get away with a lower clocked dual/quad core (i.e. 1.8, 2.0, etc.)
If they still have one thread doing the bulk of the work, then you will still need a fairly beefy core speed (i.e. 2.4 +)
And of course Core2>X2, so if you're running X2, you might want to add .2-.4 on those numbers)
I'm running a dual core opty 165 @ 2.6 and I think it will do just fine.
My vid card on the other hand :/
My other gut feel:
There's going to be a rush on hardware stores about a week after people start running the demo :cyclopsani:

- Either all that or .. people will just continue playing ut2004 for a really really long time .. There's still a good bunch of players out there who play with 20 fps and all settings to a minimun in the actual version of UT - ..

dual core cpu? i'm not sure what that is but i don't think i have it. they shouldn't make the requirements so high or they'll lose sales. it's not like graphics is what sells the game....for some people...

Dual-core refers to a CPU that includes two complete execution cores per physical processor. It combines two processors and their caches and cache controllers onto a single integrated circuit (silicon chip). It is basically two processors, in most cases, residing side-by-side on the same die.noxiousCaitSith wrote:dual core cpu? i'm not sure what that is but i don't think i have it. they shouldn't make the requirements so high or they'll lose sales. it's not like graphics is what sells the game....for some people...
These include Pentium D, Pentium Dual Core, Core Duo, Core 2 Duo, AMD 64 X2, and newer AMD FX's (FX-60 and higher) and Opterons among others (there are also Quad cores etc.).
I don't know what the requirements for UT3 are, but new games are notorious for requiring higher end machines. From what I've heard, UT3 will take advantage of dual core processors, but does not require them. Eventually everyone with a "current" system will have a dual core, as I expect manufacturers will stop making single core CPUs within a year or two.

There are only 10 kinds of people in the world. Those who read binary, and everyone else.
4013 is only a FAD
And 2989? Well that's just BAD

that first part pretty much made no sense to me. but i know i don't have one of those processors..mine's pentium 4. but...i will eventually buy a new computer. they're getting pretty cheap for the ones with dualcore...like $800 for a decent one.
but if i can't play ut3 on my comp i'll go down to whatever the heck company makes it and punch everyone involved in the face twice.
