New System VS New Video Card?
Not a bad time to be upgrading although id probly wait till the end of the month .There releaseing a new set of midrange nvida gpu's and the new AMD desktop cpu's which should bring prices down on curent hardware at least a little.I think any of the current mid/top end duelcore cpu's will run the game good I'm using a amd4400x2 and a nvida 8800gs 320meg videocard and it will run it at the max res for my 37inc vizio [1366x768]with world and actor textures set to 4.
I'll have to talk to cheap, However the Asus P5K board seems to be where it's at. This gigabyte board has some issues, apparently the onboard sound is like LAWL. Also for overclocking with a quad core, the voltage drops alot under load, which makes this not the best board for that purpose at all. Cheap went with the P5K because he needed a firewire connection. I went with this board because of its supposed great overclocking ability.
The question is other then playing UT3, and such, what other kinda work are you going to be doing.
As I demonstrated you can build a quad core system for this price range your looking at. Wait until the penryns (slightly new architecture from intel) are out, and definitely for the new gen of graphics card as was posted earlier. I probably should have waited also, However I grew tired of my old machine and that stupidly loud cooling system.

This machine will be my entertainment & gaming machine. I do some web building and photo work, but I do not do anything like video rendering, compression, etc.. I really only see myself gaming and watching movies on this one. I want to keep it simple so when I have to do rebuilds it wont be an issue of backing up all my sensitive data.
My plan is to build this, and then sell my old tower for some dough, and get a low-range laptop to run all my non-entertainment apps like Quicken, Office. I may not though - I have to wait and see.

Cheers, Damnidge
We'll if thats the case you can buy a core2duo for cheap and OC the hell out of it. Or you can just be safe and get the quad core.
Doing some tests this afternoon with it clocked 2.13ghz, and 3ghz, the fly through only came back with 15-20 fps difference between the speeds. Over clocking the video card from 513/656 to 560/666 gave me a 30 fps increase in the fly through. I'm obviously GPU bound at this point.

What? No Fatwallet.com or Slickdeals.net?zeus wrote:mwave.com
As far as "bargain sites", I use bensbargains.net, dealspl.us, and the hot deals forum on anandtech.

Here's a review which proved the beta demo at least is more dependent on the GPU, and less on the CPU.DW_Hornet wrote:We'll if thats the case you can buy a core2duo for cheap and OC the hell out of it. Or you can just be safe and get the quad core.

Ripped from theinquirer.net:
http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/ ... ney-memory
WITH BOTH G92 and RV670 coming out in different variations (256, 512 and overclocked 1GB SKUs) during November, we wanted to hear what is the engine guru behind Unreal Engine 3 going to say.
Two major titles from Epic are coming out now, Gears of War for PC and Unreal Tournament 3, mega-titles that are also going to be on market in November. When asked about the amount of video memory, here is what Tim stated:
"In Unreal Tournament 3 and Gears of War for PC, there is a significant gain in having 512MB of video memory rather than 256MB. So, first and foremost, get at least a 512MB card if you can afford it. If you haven’t maxed out your budget, then go for the maximum single-card performance that doesn’t require extreme cooling, e.g. buy an entry-level GeForce 8800 over a GeForce 8600."
As you can read for yourself, if an entry-level 8800 is your thing, skimp the 199-something card and just shell out additional 50 somethings for a 512MB card. In Blighty, 512MB board should cost 149 quids (yes, getting ripped off all over again), so this is the card Tim wholeheartedly reccomends as "at least". However, with several partners coming down the line with 1GB cards, know that UE3 engine will more than welcome more memory. We guess this puts the whole idea by some engineers about "what's the use of 1GB memory with 256-bit interface" to rest. Yes, it is worthawhile. Nuff' said.
"Are you broke yet? If not, then go for more memory, especially if you plan to build mods or levels (as the tools are more memory-intensive); or if you plan to move to 64-bit Windows Vista, which manag es memory more efficiently than 32-bit Vista or XP."
Second in the line for an upgrade is system memory. Just like we expected, there is no need to go overboard with CPUs, dual-cores or multi-cores will do just fine - but memory, memory, memory. Try to kill the need for swap file. If that means going to 4GB of memory, go to 4GB of memory and look at advanced operating systems that expand over that 32-bit limit of 2.75 to 3.24 GB of system memory.
"And, if you still have funds left over after that, and you’re feeling brave, then look at SLI, crazy cooling options, etc."
After a strong GPU and a lot of system memory were taken care of, then you can take a look at multi-GPUs.
So in short, when it comes to titles powered by Unreal Engine, there is only one word: memory. More of it, that is. µ
