I never understood the whole overclocking thing. If you buy a card/chip that performs well and does what you want from the beginning, then what is the point of pushing it further?

For me, pure curiosity and the drive to learn something new. Plus, from all the things I am reading, it really does seem to make a difference.

When I get this thing built I will play it at stock, but will eventually overclock it at the convenience of those who don't mind helping me (*cough* zuesornetwaste) :cheers:

Dont get me wrong, Im not knocking it or anything...I'm just wondering why people do it when what they have works fine stock.

Why do people make their perfectly capable cars go faster? I mean do we really need anything more then a vanilla honda civic? Why not add a bit more umph. Thats what over clocking does. There is a whole society of people dedicated to going faster, flying higher, and pushing the boundaries in every hobby, intrest, or even lifestyles.

Also by overclocking you don't have to buy the most expensive chip for more performance, something lower end will get you the performance of higher end chips, and often beyond whats available on the market.

Im not sure I agree 100% to the examples, but the second paragraph makes sense...taking a lower performance chip and making it perform to the level of a more expensive chip, thus saving some money.
