Not to mention your one person who has to change his set up, so I understand why you don't use it, we are not making them download anything we are offering a better solution.
That's where my entire post was about.. Because ingame voice chat has been disabled, people are forced to use other 3rd party programs. The chance of this happening is quite small, making it hard for people that have a microphone to broadcast to other player(s) that they should stop doing something/give something/heal/etc. In other words, people ignore that the voice chat is gone and they are too lazy to download vent, making it harder for us to communicate with them. And that, at the same time, also concludes why there's so less talking on Vent. Because most people ingame won't hear it anyways.

What you are ignoring however, is that there are other techincal reasons why voice chat is not enabled.

An alternative has been provided that is used across the gaming community. And for the monster server where there is no team issues, you don't even have to worry about switching up on teams.

Vent get's pretty chatty if you ask me... and i'd far rather offer weapons to those who aren't so lazy that they don't download it.

Don't disagree with you. Which is why there are multiple channels. Granted sometimes we all end up in the public channel. But, then when it gets to be too much, we move ourselves.

There is teams, the ones that ignore every type of communication but the voice chat, and the ones that are on a ventrilo server.

Rob, in overall i mostly hear like 5 words an hour.. Sometimes there are peaks that people have a conversation, but that's all. As for the weapon offering, that's a different part of what i'm aiming at, as example i'll take a situation from yesterday that bugged a sh!thload out of me: The server was running a map which i forgot the name of... But if i say that the secret room has some sort of animated audience, i'm sure you know what i mean. You most likely also know how to get in there, shoot a trans on a box, and it'll drop down all the way, you simply wat 15 seconds and you port in there. Now what happened, some player (name: XOI) that was ignoring all chat messages jumped in front of everyone and stood on the box, so nobody could get in, the voice over announced '1....' and after that message the whole room ends up in a bloodbath with no survivors. Only thing the players did was chat... that's the only thing we could do, didn't help a thing, because XOI seems to have the habbit to ignore the small red lines of text appearing on his left. This happened from wave 10 to 15, and didn't quite please me if i may say.

How do i make him know that he's doing it wrong, and because of that he takes all our lives? Well it would at least be noticeable if it went through his speakers, right?

Putting that aside, i'm not trying to get the voice chat online, that won't happen anyways. But i don't feel comfortable with the reasons why it has been put offline, and the easyness people talk with the 'few' disadvantages to this.

Just because someone ignores text, doesn't mean they'll pay attention to voice chat. If someone acts like a douche, they'll always be a douche.

Bottom line: quit complaining, play the game, if you want - get on vent. Oh, and quit complaining.

I don't think anyone here was intentionally suggesting that Wraith didn't have his own reasons for turning VC off. In fact it seems likely that more than one reason from more than one person might have been involved. And it would be naive of people to assume that it was due to the actions of a single player.

The point was made that there are "many reasons" why it is turned off. None of which have been listed in this thread by the advocates of "many reasons". On the other hand, several reasons have been listed to turn it on. I personally haven't seen reasons listed to keep it off (in conversations and what not) that can't be fixed my muting individuals in game (by players not admins).

Maybe if the people who know for sure why it was removed would inform everyone as to why it would clear up much of the confusion. I'm noticing that some of the admins seem to be getting frustrated with this thread; and have pretty much adopted the "just get on Vent" platform. But that doesn't tell anybody anything.

I don't understand the reasons for the frustration. This is a public forum about a server with many players. This is our venue to discuss these things. In fact we can't even discuss them in game any more. If we feel passionate enough about the topic to discuss it here then why discourage that? That's what these forums are presumably here for.

I, for one, would like to hear something more meaningful/educational/substantial than "Vent is there for a reason. Use it." Or any of the other versions of that statement I see here.

I'm sure that whatever reasons went into consideration for the decision to remove VC were good ones. But you can't expect people to not be curious or not want to voice their opinions. We played with VC for a long time. Silently removing it over night and providing no reason for that decision understandably raises all kinds of questions. None of which have been "properly" addressed in this thread.

My curiosity is piqued mostly because I see several insinuations of "technical" reasons. Yet it seems to me that unless the reasons are RPG Invasion specific, then they are not "technical" in nature. VC has worked fine on the SV server server for years and continues to do so.

My guess is that if the mysterious many reasons were technically insurmountable there wouldn't be a vote option at the top of the page. So anyone that DOES want VC turned on should vote. Cuz VC isn't showing to be real strong right now in the primaries.

Well, whether you believe me or not, there are technical reasons. It does put an additional load on the server. And onslaught is a far different gametype than monster invasion. There are reasons why there are not 32p invasion servers. Most of the ones I have seen are 10-12. It is a very resource intensive gametype.

MM has 22 players. How many monsters are bouncing around at any given time? How many objects are they shooting out? How many people have infinite ammo with hyped up weapon speed? How many people are in the same room at a time? That is a lot to keep track of at the same point.
There are only a couple of ONS maps that even come close to this (Dreamus, Spam-whatever). And they don't have to deal with monsters and overpowered weapons. There is a reason that primeval was buggy early on with everyone in the same area with spider mines.

There is a thread over on Omni's forums in their assault section about this very same issue. Their replies are essentially the same, the builtin VOIP is resource heavy.

Wraith has made quite a few changes over the last nine months to MM. Some of them have been appreciated, some of them got some kickback (lowering of the weapon speed). However, all of them have been done to make the server more stable and a more enjoyable playing enviornment. People adjust and move on.
