Need feedback on spawn camping solution

Hello there fellow DW's

I've been playing UT games for quite a long time now, but until recently I wasn't really into online gameing. Now that I'm into this I can't believe I had fun out of bots... :blackeye: Still, the clear advantage is bots don't usually spawn camp...

I'm working on some maps and I came up with an idea to aleviate this annoyance. Basically spawn camping would be very dificult -not impossible, as it's part of the game- I only want to make it nearly impossible for the stand-in-the-bushes-with-a sniper-until-round-is-over-just-for-my-stats kind of sucker.

I'm still @ drawing board stage, but I'd really appreciate your input as not to waste my time on something that won't catch!

The best solution isn't map-redesign, it's even simpler than that:

HAVE MORE SEX.

The more you have the less annoyed you get at campers.

But, I do look forward to seeing whatever you're talking about above. :compress:

I usually don't get too annoyed, I just chase'em and nail'em, but I've seen many people loosing a bolt over that. :bom:

Standing around sniping is possibly the worst thing you can possibly do for your team during a game. You don't need to penalize that, people who do so are penalizing themselves.

That said, I think it might be a good idea to up the spawnprotection time -- Currently it's like .25 seconds. A little bit more time on the spawnprotection would be nice (just remember, as soon as you pick up a weapon it instantly turns off).

I am going to have to disagree with you here. While I do not snipe often, it can definately benifit your team. If the sniper can get a good position they can protect team members from afar, or prevent the enemy from reaching a vulnerable node. As for spawnprotection time, just seems like a way to help those who are so painfully fustrated by spawn campers be happy. Any form of spawn camping can be countered, and it is a great feeling when you are able to do so.

Yeah, I'm down with Namu here. On alot of maps, I can keep the node down or pop enemies from a nice, safe distance with my trusty Sniper Rifle. Pimpin' ain't easy, and neither is snipin'; unfortunately, people seem to respect pimps, while snipers are still second-class citizens. Sniping takes alot of patience and quick-thinking; I see a major difference between sniping and camping. Why are you against it, Thunder and Wail? Granted, I don't really get a chance to snipe if my team is down, but if my team is dominating, why not take up a position and engage some unlucky chumps? I think you guys are just using it as an example of potential camping, right? But I'm just throwing it out there that it's possible to snipe and not be about stats; I snipe because it's fun and it's effective, whether I'm engaging enemies, keeping a node down from afar, or covering my homies.

I'm not totally against it, as I said, it's part of the game. I think sniping can be part of a good team strategy too, and of course I find it amusing too :cheers:
My concern derives from the fact that many people find it outrageously annoying (sadly, I think y'all know what I'm referring to), and since I'm working on some maps I thought it would be a nice idea to provide some kind of balance, of course it's just an idea that's why I'm asking for your opinion. That's kind of what I'm talking about, genuine purpouses sniping is very ok. I'd just like my maps to be enjoyable for the "sensitive" good players too. Thanks Namu, again :blackeye:

Sniping nodes is a definite good thing to do, make sure the node is taking fire and enemies can't spawn there. However, I see that as a pretty distinct thing from what ThunderKISS was referring to, which is using sniping as a primary tactic for dispatching other players. Sniping can definitely help you in the endgame when your team has pushed the enemy all the way back to their base, but that's the only time I see it as generally helpful to your team. In the early-mid game, or if your team is down there are typically much better ways to benefit your team.

There is always a good time to snipe, actually - but you have to be creative and find a time and a PLACE that's right for the game situation. You're not playing deathmatch, you're playing ONS, so if you want to snipe, help your team.

Early Game: Get that link gun out, get your first nodes built, then get over to where you know the main enemy advance is. Even if they're just advancing to build more of their locked nodes, taking a few headshots will slow down their build, and will get people looking for you instead of linking nodes. One guy stalling 5 or 6? Great thing to do.

Midgame: Stay in those primary areas, the lines between where the enemy is spawning and where the battle is. Sniper cover on the main battle really isn't as effective, because they EXPECT to be taking fire then. They also somewhat expect to take fire right when they spawn, from campers. They don't usually expect to get shot in the head halfway in-between.

Endgame: Winning endgames should be a sniper's paradise. Spawn camp them in the base, or better yet, snipe them between the base and the first nodes, where they'll expect it less. You should have a Hellbender to replace your rifle, too, if it's a large enough map with plenty of spare vehicles.

Losing endgames aren't the place for a sniper. Put your sniper rifle away and get another body in that big fight for the first node...unless you happen to see sniper fire coming down. If THEY have a sniper, pick him off, then keep moving. If you start to take that first node, then it's a judgement call - many skilled snipers are better off taking up a sniping spot and slowing the enemy's counter-advance than trying to fend them off at the node. The fewer guys that make it to the node, the better your buddies do, after all.

Snipers are NOT just out for their own scores. Some are, but I believe any ONS team should have at least one or two sniping specialists on it, and they shouldn't be discouraged from using their skills.
